Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Transferable Skills

Abstract

Adult Education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies that support personal, social, and occupational development. Transferable skills are abilities that can be applied across different jobs, occupations, learning environments, and everyday situations. The ability to identify transferable skills is important because it helps adults recognize the value of their existing abilities and understand how those abilities can be applied in new situations. However, some adults may find it difficult to recognize skills acquired through previous work, education, volunteering, or everyday experiences. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to identify transferable skills. Adult Education provides learning experiences that can help adults examine their previous experiences and recognize the skills developed through different activities. Through self-assessment exercises, discussions, practical activities, reflective tasks, case studies, and skills-identification exercises, adults can learn to recognize abilities such as communication, problem-solving, organization, teamwork, adaptability, and interpersonal skills. These approaches can help learners connect their previous experiences with skills that may be useful in other occupational, educational, and social settings. Adults’ ability to identify transferable skills refers to their capacity to recognize abilities developed in one context that can be applied effectively in another context. This involves examining previous experiences, identifying the skills demonstrated through those experiences, and recognizing situations where those skills may be useful. Adults who can identify their transferable skills may be better prepared to describe their abilities when considering employment, further education, vocational training, or changes in occupational responsibilities. Adult Education can therefore provide useful knowledge and practical activities for strengthening this ability. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education, vocational, and continuing learning programmes. An appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess adults’ exposure to Adult Education and their ability to identify transferable skills. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to identify transferable skills. Adults exposed to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate improved abilities to recognize skills gained from previous employment, education, community activities, and everyday experiences. The study may further indicate that practical self-assessment and skills-identification activities help adults recognize how their existing abilities can be applied across different occupational and learning situations. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators may need to incorporate activities that help learners examine their previous experiences and identify the skills developed through them. Skills inventories, self-assessment exercises, reflective activities, experience-mapping tasks, and practical case studies can help adults recognize the wider value of their abilities. Such approaches can make Adult Education more responsive to adults’ changing educational and occupational needs. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, vocational training providers, career guidance practitioners, employers, and administrators of adult education programmes. Adult learners may gain greater awareness of the skills they already possess and their possible applications in different settings. Adult educators and career guidance practitioners may gain useful information for supporting adults in recognizing their existing competencies, while training providers and employers may benefit from adults who can better communicate the range of skills acquired through previous experiences. The study recommends that Adult Education programmes should include practical activities that enable adults to identify and describe their transferable skills. Adult educators should use self-assessment, skills inventories, reflective exercises, experience-based activities, and practical examples to help learners connect previous experiences with applicable skills. Learners should also be encouraged to regularly review the skills developed through work, education, and other activities. The study concludes that Adult Education can improve adults’ ability to identify transferable skills and help them recognize the broader value of their existing competencies.
