Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Emotional Appeals in Public Messages
Abstract
Public messages are widely used to communicate information, influence attitudes, encourage particular behaviours, and draw attention to social issues. Such messages may contain emotional appeals that seek to influence audiences by evoking feelings such as fear, sympathy, hope, anger, pride, or concern. Adults encounter these appeals in public announcements, social media content, campaigns, advertisements, community communications, and other information channels. The ability to identify emotional appeals is therefore important for critical interpretation and informed decision-making. Adult Education can develop critical thinking, communication awareness, and information-evaluation skills that may help adults recognize emotional appeals in public messages. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to identify emotional appeals in public messages. Adult Education can expose learners to concepts relating to persuasive communication, message analysis, emotional influence, media awareness, and critical evaluation of information. Through discussions, practical examples, case studies, group activities, and analysis of public messages, adults can examine how emotional language and presentation may be used to influence audiences. Learners may explore the ways messages appeal to particular feelings and consider how such appeals can affect interpretation and responses. These learning experiences can provide adults with practical skills for examining both the emotional and informational elements of public communication. Adults’ ability to identify emotional appeals in public messages refers to their capacity to recognize when a message deliberately uses emotional language, imagery, stories, or situations to influence an audience’s feelings or responses. This ability involves examining the content and presentation of a message and distinguishing emotional influence from factual or informational elements. Adult Education may strengthen this ability by encouraging critical questioning, careful observation, reflective thinking, and evaluation of communication strategies. Improved recognition of emotional appeals can help adults interpret public messages more thoughtfully rather than responding solely to the emotions generated by a message. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to identify emotional appeals in public messages. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to identify emotional appeals in public messages. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to identify emotional appeals in public messages. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational experiences will demonstrate improved ability to recognize emotional language, identify the feelings a message attempts to evoke, and distinguish emotional appeals from other forms of communication. The study may further establish that practical analysis of public messages helps adults become more attentive to persuasive communication strategies and strengthens their ability to evaluate messages before forming judgments or making decisions. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in designing learning experiences that strengthen critical communication and information-evaluation skills. Adult Education programmes can incorporate analysis of public announcements, campaign messages, social media posts, advertisements, and other communication materials. Role-playing, guided discussions, comparative analysis, and practical identification exercises can also help learners recognize emotional appeals and examine their potential influence in different communication contexts. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, media educators, consumers, and other groups concerned with critical engagement with public information. It is expected to recommend greater emphasis on message analysis, emotional appeal recognition, critical thinking, persuasive communication, and information evaluation within relevant Adult Education programmes. The study concludes that Adult Education can provide adults with useful knowledge and practical skills for identifying emotional appeals in public messages, thereby supporting more thoughtful interpretation of information and more informed responses to persuasive communication.
