Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Community Project Risks
Abstract
Adult Education provides adults with knowledge, skills, and competencies that can improve their ability to understand and respond to practical challenges in their communities. Community project risks are potential situations or factors that may negatively affect the planning, implementation, cost, quality, or successful completion of community projects. The ability to identify such risks is important because early recognition can help community members anticipate challenges and take appropriate preventive measures. However, limited knowledge and inadequate risk-identification skills may reduce the effectiveness of community project activities. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to identify community project risks. Adult Education can equip learners with practical knowledge through discussions, problem-solving activities, case studies, group exercises, demonstrations, and experience-based learning. These approaches can help adults recognize different types of risks associated with community projects, including financial, environmental, organizational, technical, logistical, and participation-related risks. By connecting learning experiences with real-life community situations, Adult Education can enable adults to examine project conditions, identify possible challenges, and understand factors that may threaten project success. Adults’ ability to identify community project risks refers to their capacity to recognize potential problems that may affect the successful implementation of community development projects. This includes identifying possible sources of financial loss, resource shortages, delays, poor coordination, environmental challenges, inadequate participation, and other project-related difficulties. Adults who possess this ability can identify warning signs at an early stage and provide useful information for project planning and decision-making. Adult Education can therefore contribute to the development of the knowledge and analytical skills required for effective risk identification. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes and community-based learning activities. An appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adults’ exposure to Adult Education and their ability to identify community project risks. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to identify community project risks. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to recognize potential financial, organizational, environmental, technical, and logistical risks associated with community projects. The study may also indicate that practical learning activities and problem-solving exercises help adults develop greater awareness of project challenges and improve their ability to identify risks before they negatively affect project implementation. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical risk-identification activities into relevant community development and adult learning programmes. Case studies, project simulations, group discussions, problem-solving exercises, and analysis of real-life community projects can help adults develop practical risk-identification skills. Such approaches can make Adult Education more responsive to the challenges adults encounter when participating in community development initiatives. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community development organizations, community leaders, project committees, non-governmental organizations, and administrators of adult education programmes. Adult learners may acquire useful skills for recognizing potential challenges in community projects, while community organizations and project committees may benefit from members who can identify risks at an early stage. Adult educators may also use the findings to improve the design of learning activities that prepare adults for effective participation in community project planning and implementation. The study recommends that Adult Education programmes should provide practical learning experiences that develop adults’ ability to recognize and assess risks associated with community projects. Adult educators should use project-based activities, case studies, simulations, and problem-solving exercises to strengthen learners’ practical understanding of project risks. Community organizations should also encourage adults with relevant training to participate in project planning and risk-identification activities. The study concludes that Adult Education can contribute significantly to improving adults’ ability to identify community project risks and support more effective community project implementation.
