Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Bias in Written Information
Abstract
Adult education plays an important role in developing adults’ ability to examine and understand written information critically. Written materials may sometimes present information from a particular viewpoint, emphasize certain details, omit relevant perspectives, or use language that influences how readers perceive an issue. When adults are unable to recognize such bias, they may accept information without adequately considering how it has been presented. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to identify bias in written information. Adult education can provide learners with practical skills for examining written materials and recognizing indicators of biased presentation. Learning activities may include comparing different written accounts of the same issue, identifying selective descriptions, examining the use of persuasive language, considering omitted perspectives, and distinguishing factual statements from interpretations. Through guided reading, group discussions, and practical analysis of written materials, adults can develop greater awareness of how bias may appear in information. Adults’ ability to identify bias in written information refers to their capacity to recognize when a written source presents information in a one-sided, selective, or otherwise slanted manner. This ability involves examining the language, evidence, emphasis, omissions, and perspectives presented in a written material. Adult education is expected to strengthen this ability by developing adults’ critical reading, analytical thinking, comparison, and information-evaluation skills. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be drawn. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a written-information analysis assessment containing selected materials for participants to examine and identify possible forms of bias. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to identify bias. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to relevant adult education demonstrate improved ability to identify bias in written information compared with those with limited exposure to such education. Participants are also expected to demonstrate greater ability to recognize selective presentation, examine the language used in written materials, identify omitted perspectives, and distinguish objective information from potentially biased presentation. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education by emphasizing the importance of critical reading and information-evaluation skills in adult learning programmes. Educators can use newspaper articles, advertisements, public statements, workplace documents, and other suitable written materials to help learners practise identifying bias. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, educators, community facilitators, workplace learners, and individuals who regularly depend on written information when forming opinions and making decisions. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical activities that enable adults to examine written information for possible bias. Educators should encourage learners to compare different accounts, examine wording and evidence, consider omitted perspectives, and evaluate how information is presented. It is concluded that adult education can improve adults’ ability to identify bias in written information and support more careful, balanced, and critical engagement with written materials.
