Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Evaluate Their Own Learning Progress

Abstract

Adult education provides adults with knowledge, skills, and learning experiences that support continuous personal and educational development, while the ability to evaluate one’s own learning progress refers to the capacity to examine, judge, and reflect on changes in knowledge, skills, understanding, and performance over time. The ability to evaluate learning progress is important because it enables adult learners to recognize areas of improvement, identify learning difficulties, and determine whether their educational efforts are producing the desired outcomes. However, some adults may have limited skills for assessing their own learning progress. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to evaluate their own learning progress. Adult education provides opportunities for learners to participate in activities that encourage reflection, self-assessment, review of learning outcomes, and identification of areas requiring further development. Through classroom exercises, learning tasks, feedback activities, reflective discussions, and assessment practices, adults can become more aware of their strengths and weaknesses as learners. These experiences may help them develop practical approaches for examining their performance and making informed judgments about their learning progress. The ability to evaluate one’s own learning progress involves reviewing completed learning activities, comparing performance with established learning objectives, identifying areas of improvement, recognizing persistent difficulties, and determining the need for additional learning activities. Adults who can effectively evaluate their progress are better positioned to take responsibility for their learning and make appropriate adjustments to their study activities. Adult education can therefore contribute to this ability by providing learners with opportunities to reflect on and assess their educational development. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult education and adults’ ability to evaluate their own learning progress. The data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to evaluate their own learning progress. Adults who participate in adult education programmes are expected to demonstrate greater ability to review their learning performance, identify areas of improvement, recognize learning difficulties, compare their progress with learning objectives, and determine areas requiring further attention. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may incorporate self-assessment, reflective activities, learning reviews, and progress-monitoring exercises into instructional practices. Providing learners with regular opportunities to examine their performance may encourage greater awareness of their learning development and enable them to take more responsibility for improving their educational outcomes. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, programme coordinators, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved awareness of their learning strengths and areas requiring development, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing learning activities that encourage learner reflection and self-evaluation. Programme coordinators and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen learner-centred practices within adult education programmes. The study will recommend that adult education programmes provide regular opportunities for learners to assess and reflect on their learning progress. Adult educators should encourage the use of self-assessment activities, learning reviews, progress records, and reflective exercises to help learners evaluate their educational development. The study will conclude that adult education can strengthen adults’ ability to evaluate their own learning progress and encourage greater responsibility for continuous learning improvement.
