Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Evaluate Product Information
Abstract
Adult Education provides adults with knowledge and skills that can support informed decision-making in everyday life. Product information refers to details provided about goods and services, including descriptions, prices, ingredients, usage instructions, expiry dates, quality claims, and other information that can assist consumers in making appropriate choices. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to evaluate product information. The study will focus on how educational experiences can strengthen adults’ ability to examine, understand, compare, and assess information before making purchasing decisions. Adult Education can expose learners to practical knowledge about consumer information, product descriptions, labels, promotional claims, quality indicators, and other details commonly encountered when purchasing goods and services. Through discussions, examples, practical exercises, and problem-solving activities, adults can learn how to identify important product information and determine whether it is sufficiently clear and relevant for decision-making. Such learning experiences may also improve their awareness of the importance of examining available information rather than relying solely on advertisements or verbal claims. Adults’ ability to evaluate product information involves their capacity to identify relevant details, interpret product descriptions, compare information from different products, assess claims, and determine whether available information is adequate for making informed choices. This ability is important because consumers frequently encounter large amounts of information when selecting products. Adult Education may improve this ability by developing critical evaluation skills and encouraging adults to examine information carefully before accepting product claims or making purchasing decisions. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to evaluate product information. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to evaluate product information. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to evaluate product information. Adults who participate in relevant educational programmes may demonstrate improved ability to identify important product details, compare alternatives, assess product claims, and recognize information that may require further clarification. The study may further indicate that practical learning experiences can strengthen adults’ confidence and accuracy when evaluating information encountered during purchasing decisions. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community learning facilitators, consumer educators, and organisations involved in adult learning. Incorporating practical consumer-information activities into Adult Education programmes may help learners develop skills that can be applied directly to everyday purchasing situations. Activities involving product labels, descriptions, promotional messages, price information, and comparative product information may provide useful opportunities for adults to practise evaluating information in realistic contexts. The study will be significant to adult learners, consumers, Adult Education practitioners, consumer educators, and other stakeholders interested in promoting informed consumer decision-making. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes should include practical learning activities that expose adults to different forms of product information and provide opportunities to practise evaluating such information. The study concludes that Adult Education can serve as an important avenue for strengthening adults’ ability to critically examine product information and make more informed choices.
