Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Distinguish Reliable and Unreliable Research Findings
Abstract
The ability to distinguish reliable and unreliable research findings is an important information-literacy skill that enables adults to make informed judgments about studies, reports, surveys, and other forms of research-based information. Adult Education provides structured learning opportunities through which adults can develop the knowledge and critical skills required to examine research findings carefully and determine whether information is credible, consistent, and supported by adequate evidence. However, many adults encounter research findings without sufficient knowledge of how to assess their reliability, which may increase the likelihood of accepting misleading or poorly supported conclusions. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to distinguish reliable and unreliable research findings. Adult Education can introduce adults to basic principles of research literacy, including understanding research purposes, identifying sources of information, examining evidence, interpreting research claims, and recognizing the difference between evidence-based conclusions and unsupported assertions. Through discussions, practical activities, examples of research reports, guided analysis, and problem-solving exercises, adult learners can develop greater awareness of how research findings are produced and presented. Such educational experiences may also help adults examine the quality, relevance, consistency, and supporting evidence associated with research findings before accepting them as accurate. The ability to distinguish reliable and unreliable research findings involves more than simply identifying information as true or false. Adults need to examine the source of a finding, consider how information was obtained, recognize unsupported generalizations, compare findings with available evidence, and identify limitations that may affect conclusions. Adult Education can strengthen these abilities by providing learners with opportunities to evaluate research claims and apply simple criteria for judging the credibility of findings. Improved competence in this area can support more careful interpretation of research-based information in everyday, educational, occupational, and community settings. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be drawn using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment of participants’ ability to distinguish reliable and unreliable research findings. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on the identified ability. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education is positively associated with adults’ ability to distinguish reliable and unreliable research findings. Adults who receive relevant instruction and engage in research-literacy activities are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities in examining evidence, evaluating sources, recognizing unsupported claims, and differentiating well-supported findings from questionable ones. The expected findings may further indicate that structured exposure to research evaluation activities improves adults’ confidence and competence in making informed judgments about research-based information. The findings are expected to have implications for the planning and delivery of Adult Education programmes. Adult Education practitioners may need to incorporate practical research-literacy activities that enable learners to examine real or simulated research findings, identify weaknesses in research claims, compare different sources, and assess the evidence supporting conclusions. Such activities can make learning more practical and relevant while strengthening adults’ critical evaluation skills. The study may also encourage the development of learning materials that present research findings in accessible formats and provide adults with clear criteria for evaluating the reliability of information. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, programme planners, community organizations, researchers, and other stakeholders interested in improving adults’ ability to evaluate information. It will provide useful evidence on the role of Adult Education in developing research-evaluation competence and may contribute to the improvement of programmes designed to promote informed decision-making. The study recommends greater integration of research-literacy and evidence-evaluation activities into Adult Education programmes. It concludes that strengthening adults’ ability to distinguish reliable from unreliable research findings can contribute to more informed interpretation of information and more responsible decision-making.
