Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Distinguish Needs from Wants

Abstract

Needs and wants represent two different categories of personal consumption, with needs referring to essential goods and services required for basic living and wants referring to items or services that provide comfort, convenience, or satisfaction but are not essential. The ability to distinguish between them is important because adults must often make spending decisions with limited financial resources. However, inadequate knowledge of basic financial concepts may make it difficult to establish appropriate spending priorities. Therefore, this study examines the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to distinguish needs from wants. Adult education can provide adults with practical knowledge about essential and non-essential expenditures, spending priorities, financial resources, and responsible consumption. Through discussions, illustrations, practical purchasing situations, and classification exercises, learners can examine different goods and services and determine whether they represent needs or wants. Such learning activities can strengthen adults’ understanding of consumption priorities and improve their ability to apply these concepts to everyday financial situations. Adults’ ability to distinguish needs from wants refers to their capacity to correctly classify expenses according to whether they are essential or non-essential. This ability can help adults establish priorities when allocating available financial resources and evaluate purchases before spending. Adult education can strengthen this skill by providing clear explanations, practical examples, and opportunities to classify and discuss different spending situations. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education programmes, while an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical classification assessment designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ ability to distinguish needs from wants. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to distinguish needs from wants. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational instruction will demonstrate improved ability to classify expenditures, identify essential priorities, evaluate non-essential purchases, and apply the distinction when making everyday spending decisions. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Facilitators can incorporate practical purchasing scenarios, classification exercises, household expenditure examples, and group discussions into financial literacy lessons. These activities can help adults connect financial concepts with everyday experiences and develop practical skills for establishing appropriate spending priorities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult education facilitators, community learning centres, financial literacy organizations, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from improved ability to prioritize essential expenditures and evaluate discretionary purchases, while facilitators can use the findings to strengthen practical financial literacy instruction. Organizations involved in adult financial education may also benefit from improved approaches to teaching responsible consumption. The study will recommend that needs-and-wants education be incorporated into relevant adult education programmes. Facilitators should use realistic examples, classification activities, and practical spending situations to help adults understand the distinction and apply it to their financial decisions. The study concludes that effective adult education can improve adults’ ability to distinguish needs from wants and support more informed spending priorities.
