Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Distinguish Facts from Opinions
Abstract
Adult education plays an important role in developing adults’ ability to understand, evaluate, and respond appropriately to different forms of information. The ability to distinguish facts from opinions is particularly important because adults encounter statements through conversations, news reports, advertisements, social media, workplace communication, and community discussions. Difficulty in differentiating factual information from personal beliefs or judgments may affect the quality of decisions individuals make. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to distinguish facts from opinions. Adult education can expose learners to practical approaches for examining information and identifying the characteristics of factual and opinion-based statements. Learning activities may involve examining written statements, comparing claims with available evidence, identifying language that expresses personal judgment, and discussing the difference between verifiable information and individual viewpoints. Through guided exercises and real-life examples, adults can develop greater awareness of how information is presented and communicated. Adults’ ability to distinguish facts from opinions refers to their capacity to recognize whether a statement can be verified through evidence or primarily expresses a belief, preference, interpretation, or judgment. This ability requires careful attention to the content and wording of information rather than accepting statements solely because they appear convincing. Adult education is expected to strengthen this ability by developing learners’ critical reading, information-evaluation, and reasoning skills. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be drawn. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a fact-and-opinion identification assessment containing relevant statements for participants to classify. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to distinguish facts from opinions. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to relevant adult education demonstrate improved ability to distinguish factual statements from opinions. Participants are also expected to show greater ability to examine claims critically, recognize statements that express personal viewpoints, and identify information that can be verified through evidence. Such improvements may support more careful interpretation of information encountered in everyday life. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education by emphasizing the importance of critical information-evaluation skills in adult learning programmes. Educators can incorporate statement-classification exercises, discussions, reading activities, and practical examples from everyday communication to help learners develop the ability to evaluate information carefully. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, educators, community facilitators, workplace learners, and individuals who regularly encounter different forms of information. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include practical activities that help adults identify and distinguish factual information from opinions. Educators should provide learners with opportunities to examine different statements, consider supporting evidence, and explain the basis for their classifications. It is concluded that adult education can improve adults’ ability to distinguish facts from opinions and contribute to more careful, informed, and critical engagement with information.
