Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Deliver Short Presentations

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities designed to improve adults’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and practical competencies, while the ability to deliver short presentations refers to the capacity to organize ideas, communicate information clearly, and present a brief message effectively before an audience. The ability to deliver short presentations is important in workplace activities, community meetings, educational settings, and everyday communication. However, some adults may experience difficulties in organizing presentation content, speaking clearly, maintaining audience attention, and delivering information within a limited period. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to deliver short presentations. Adult education provides adults with learning experiences that can strengthen communication, organization, confidence, and public-speaking competencies. Through classroom discussions, demonstrations, practical exercises, group activities, presentations, and guided practice, adults can learn how to identify a presentation purpose, organize key points, prepare appropriate content, introduce a topic, explain ideas clearly, and conclude effectively. These learning experiences can provide adults with practical opportunities to develop presentation techniques and apply them in realistic communication situations. The ability to deliver short presentations involves several competencies, including selecting relevant content, organizing ideas logically, speaking clearly, maintaining appropriate eye contact, using suitable body language, managing presentation time, and responding appropriately to audience reactions. Adults who possess these skills can communicate information more effectively within a limited period. Adult education can strengthen these abilities by providing regular opportunities for learners to prepare and deliver short presentations, receive constructive feedback, and improve their communication performance. The study will adopt a suitable research design to investigate the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to deliver short presentations. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured presentation skills assessment designed to evaluate participants’ ability to organize and deliver short presentations. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on the identified ability. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to deliver short presentations. Adults exposed to relevant learning experiences are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in organizing presentation content, communicating ideas clearly, managing presentation time, using appropriate delivery techniques, and maintaining effective interaction with an audience. The study is also expected to indicate that repeated presentation practice and constructive feedback can strengthen adults’ confidence and competence in short presentation delivery. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators can incorporate regular presentation activities into learning programmes to strengthen learners’ communication and public-speaking abilities. Short individual presentations, group presentations, demonstrations, peer assessment, and guided practice can provide learners with opportunities to develop and apply presentation skills. These approaches can make adult education more practical and help learners transfer presentation competencies to workplace, community, educational, and organizational settings. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community organizations, workplace groups, voluntary associations, and institutions that require effective oral communication. Adult learners may develop greater confidence and competence in communicating ideas before an audience, while adult educators may gain useful approaches for teaching practical presentation skills. Organizations may also benefit from adults who can communicate information clearly and effectively during meetings, training activities, community programmes, and other group engagements. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include practical activities that develop short presentation skills. Adult educators should provide learners with regular opportunities to prepare and deliver brief presentations, organize ideas, practise verbal and non-verbal communication, manage presentation time, and receive constructive feedback. Presentation exercises should be varied and related to real-life situations to strengthen learners’ practical competence. The study concludes that adult education can contribute significantly to improving adults’ ability to deliver short presentations and enhance their effectiveness in communicating information to different audiences.
