Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Connect New Knowledge with Everyday Experiences

Abstract

Adult education provides adults with knowledge, skills, and learning experiences that can be applied to different areas of life, while the ability to connect new knowledge with everyday experiences refers to the capacity to relate newly acquired information, concepts, and skills to familiar situations, activities, and experiences encountered in daily life. This ability is important because it can make learning more meaningful and improve the practical application of knowledge. However, some adults may experience difficulties relating newly acquired knowledge to situations outside the classroom. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to connect new knowledge with everyday experiences. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge through discussions, practical activities, demonstrations, problem-solving exercises, and experience-based learning. These approaches allow learners to relate instructional content to situations they encounter in their homes, workplaces, communities, and other everyday settings. By drawing on learners’ existing experiences during instruction, adult education can make new information easier to understand and encourage learners to recognize its relevance to their daily activities. The ability to connect new knowledge with everyday experiences involves recognizing relationships between newly learned concepts and familiar situations, experiences, activities, or problems. Adults who can make such connections may be better able to understand the practical relevance of what they learn and apply new knowledge appropriately in daily situations. Adult education can therefore contribute to this ability by providing learning experiences that encourage learners to compare new information with previous experiences and identify practical applications. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult education and adults’ ability to connect new knowledge with everyday experiences. The data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to connect new knowledge with everyday experiences. Adults who participate in adult education programmes are expected to demonstrate greater ability to relate newly acquired knowledge to familiar situations, recognize practical applications of learning, and use previous experiences to understand new information. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may incorporate practical examples, experience-sharing activities, demonstrations, case situations, and problem-solving exercises into instructional practices. Linking instructional content to learners’ existing experiences may help adults understand the relevance of new knowledge and encourage them to apply what they learn to everyday situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, programme coordinators, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from greater ability to recognize the practical value of new knowledge, while adult educators may gain useful strategies for making instruction more relevant to learners’ experiences. Programme coordinators and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen experience-based and practical approaches within adult education programmes. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate learners’ everyday experiences into instructional activities and provide regular opportunities for learners to relate new knowledge to familiar situations. Adult educators should use practical examples, discussions, demonstrations, and experience-based tasks to help learners identify connections between learning content and everyday life. The study will conclude that adult education can strengthen adults’ ability to connect new knowledge with everyday experiences and promote more meaningful and practical learning.
