Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Complete Application Procedures

Abstract

The ability to complete application procedures is an important functional skill because it enables adults to provide required information, follow application requirements, and successfully access educational, employment, financial, and public service opportunities. Adult education provides learners with literacy, comprehension, and practical information-processing skills that can improve their ability to manage application-related tasks. However, some adults may experience difficulties understanding application requirements, completing different sections correctly, or following the required sequence of procedures. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to complete application procedures. Adult education exposes learners to practical activities that require them to read information, interpret requirements, provide personal details appropriately, and follow specified procedures. Through guided exercises, learners can practise identifying required fields, understanding instructions, organizing necessary information, checking completed sections, and correcting omissions. Such activities can help adults develop systematic approaches to handling application processes and reduce difficulties associated with completing procedural tasks. The ability to complete application procedures refers to the capacity to understand application requirements, provide the necessary information, complete relevant sections accurately, and follow specified procedures to the point of submission. Effective completion requires attention to instructions, accurate information entry, proper sequencing of steps, and careful review of completed applications. Adult education is expected to influence this ability by strengthening learners’ functional literacy, comprehension, and practical application of written information. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design. The population will consist of adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected. Data will be collected using an application-procedure performance assessment administered before and after exposure to relevant adult education activities. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to complete application procedures. The study is expected to establish that adult learners exposed to adult education demonstrate improved ability to complete application procedures compared with their performance before the intervention. The findings are expected to show improvements in understanding application requirements, entering relevant information, following procedural steps, identifying omissions, and reviewing completed applications. This would suggest that adult education can contribute positively to adults’ ability to manage practical application tasks. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Adult education instructors may incorporate realistic application exercises into functional literacy and practical learning activities. Learners can be provided with opportunities to practise interpreting requirements, completing application sections, checking information, and following procedures systematically. Such activities may make adult education more relevant to practical situations encountered in everyday life. Adult learners, adult education instructors, programme coordinators, curriculum developers, and educational administrators are expected to benefit from the findings. Adult learners may develop greater confidence and competence in managing application procedures, while instructors may gain practical approaches for strengthening functional literacy and procedural skills. Programme coordinators and curriculum developers may also use the findings to incorporate practical application activities into adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include practical exercises that require learners to interpret and complete application procedures. Instructors should guide learners in understanding requirements, providing relevant information, following procedural steps, and checking applications for completeness and accuracy. It is concluded that adult education can play an important role in improving adults’ ability to complete application procedures and strengthening their capacity to manage practical written and procedural tasks.
