Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Compare Savings Options
Abstract
Savings options are different methods through which individuals can set aside money for future needs, with variations in accessibility, conditions, returns, flexibility, and associated charges. The ability to compare savings options is important because adults need to evaluate available alternatives before choosing an option that is appropriate for their financial objectives. Limited knowledge of savings options may result in poor choices or failure to recognize important differences between alternatives. Therefore, this study examines the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to compare savings options. Adult education can provide adults with knowledge about different savings alternatives and the features that distinguish one option from another. Through practical examples, comparative exercises, discussions, and financial decision-making activities, learners can develop skills for examining factors such as accessibility, withdrawal conditions, charges, duration, and potential benefits. Such learning can help adults approach savings choices more systematically. Adults’ ability to compare savings options refers to their capacity to identify differences and similarities between available savings alternatives and assess their relevant features before making a choice. Effective comparison requires adults to examine important conditions, costs, accessibility, and potential benefits associated with different options. Adult education can strengthen this ability by providing learners with practical knowledge and opportunities to evaluate realistic savings scenarios. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education programmes, while an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical savings-options comparison assessment designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ ability to compare savings options. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to compare savings options. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational instruction will demonstrate improved ability to identify differences between savings alternatives, examine their conditions, compare associated costs and benefits, and select options based on clearly stated financial considerations. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Facilitators can incorporate comparison tables, realistic savings scenarios, sample financial information, and guided decision-making exercises into lessons. These activities can provide adults with practical opportunities to evaluate different savings alternatives and apply financial knowledge to everyday decisions. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult education facilitators, community learning centres, financial literacy organizations, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from improved ability to evaluate savings alternatives before making financial choices, while facilitators can use the findings to strengthen practical financial education. Organizations involved in financial literacy may also use the findings to develop learning activities that improve adults’ financial decision-making skills. The study will recommend that practical comparison of savings options be incorporated into relevant adult education programmes. Facilitators should use realistic examples, comparison exercises, and clearly presented financial information to help adults evaluate different alternatives. The study concludes that effective adult education can improve adults’ ability to compare savings options and support more informed personal financial decisions.
