Effect of Insurance Product Mix on Underwriting Performance

Abstract

Insurance product mix refers to the combination and distribution of different insurance products offered and managed by an insurance company. The composition of an insurer's product portfolio can influence premium income, claims experience, risk exposure, operating costs, and overall underwriting results. Maintaining an appropriate product mix may enable insurers to spread risks across different classes of business, while an unsuitable concentration in particular products may expose the insurer to unfavourable underwriting outcomes. Examining the effect of product mix on underwriting performance is therefore important for effective insurance portfolio management. The study will examine the effect of insurance product mix on underwriting performance. It will investigate whether differences in the composition of insurance products are associated with variations in underwriting results. The study will assess the contribution of different product categories to premium income, claims costs, and underwriting profit, with the aim of determining how the structure of an insurer's product portfolio influences its overall underwriting performance. The analysis will consider product categories, premium income, claims incurred, underwriting expenses, loss ratios, and underwriting profit. The relative contribution of different insurance products to the overall portfolio will be examined to identify variations in underwriting performance across product classes. Appropriate statistical techniques will be used to determine the direction and strength of the relationship between insurance product mix and selected measures of underwriting performance. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical insurance data containing information on product categories, premium income, claims experience, underwriting expenses, and underwriting results will be collected and analysed. Descriptive statistics will be used to examine the composition of the product portfolio and trends in underwriting performance, while correlation and regression techniques may be employed to determine whether variations in product mix have a statistically significant effect on underwriting performance. The study is expected to reveal that differences in insurance product mix may be associated with variations in underwriting performance. Product categories with favourable claims experience and adequate premium pricing may contribute positively to underwriting results, while products with relatively high claims or expenses may place pressure on profitability. The findings may also indicate that a balanced product mix can help distribute underwriting exposure and reduce excessive dependence on individual classes of insurance business. The findings will be useful to insurance companies, actuaries, underwriters, financial managers, and portfolio management professionals. Understanding the effect of product mix on underwriting performance may assist insurers in evaluating product profitability, improving portfolio composition, strengthening underwriting decisions, and allocating capital and resources more effectively. The study may also support product review and strategic decisions concerning the expansion or reduction of particular insurance business lines. The study concludes that insurance product mix is an important factor in determining underwriting performance and should receive appropriate attention in insurance portfolio management. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly evaluate the performance of individual products, monitor the composition of their portfolios, and maintain a product mix that supports adequate premium income, manageable claims exposure, and sustainable underwriting results. Effective product portfolio management may contribute to improved underwriting performance and long-term insurance business sustainability.
