Effect of Insurance Policy Age on Claim Occurrence Rates

Abstract

Insurance policy age refers to the length of time that an insurance policy has remained active from its inception to a particular period of observation. The age of a policy may be associated with changes in exposure, policyholder behaviour, coverage conditions, and the likelihood of claim occurrence. Understanding policy age is therefore important in actuarial analysis because variations in claim occurrence rates across different policy ages can influence risk assessment and insurance pricing. This study will examine the effect of insurance policy age on claim occurrence rates. It will assess how the duration of policies influences the frequency with which claims occur during different stages of the policy lifecycle. The study will also examine the relationship between policy age, exposure duration, claim frequency, policy characteristics, and observed claims experience. The study will focus on insurance policy age, claim occurrence rates, policy duration, claim frequency, exposure periods, claims experience, policy characteristics, renewal patterns, and insurance risk. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be used to analyse claim occurrence across different policy age categories. Comparative and sensitivity analyses will also be applied to determine whether variations in policy age are associated with changes in claim occurrence rates. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical insurance policy, exposure, and claims data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, policy age analysis, claim frequency analysis, exposure-based rate calculations, trend analysis, comparative analysis, regression analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Different policy age groups will be evaluated to determine their relationship with observed claim occurrence rates. The study is expected to reveal that insurance policy age may have a significant effect on claim occurrence rates. Claim occurrence rates may vary across different stages of the policy lifecycle as exposure conditions, policyholder behaviour, and risk characteristics change over time. The magnitude and direction of the relationship may depend on the type of insurance, policy duration, exposure levels, renewal patterns, claims experience, and characteristics of the insured risks. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, underwriters, pricing analysts, claims managers, risk managers, and insurance portfolio managers. It may provide useful information for analysing claims experience, developing appropriate risk assumptions, reviewing premium rates, forecasting claim frequency, and improving insurance portfolio management. The findings may also assist insurers in understanding variations in claim occurrence across different stages of policy duration. The study concludes that insurance policy age is an important factor to consider when analysing claim occurrence rates because claims experience may vary across different stages of a policy's lifecycle. It is therefore recommended that insurers analyse claims according to policy age, incorporate relevant duration-based assumptions into actuarial models, and regularly review claim occurrence patterns to support accurate risk assessment and premium determination.
