Effect of Insurance Contract Boundaries on Life Insurance Liability Valuation

Abstract

Insurance contract boundaries define the period over which future cash flows are considered to arise from an insurance contract for valuation purposes. In life insurance, contract boundaries determine which future premiums, benefits, claims, expenses, and other cash flows are included in the measurement of insurance liabilities. Accurate identification of these boundaries is therefore important for producing reliable actuarial valuations of long-term life insurance obligations. The study examines the effect of insurance contract boundaries on life insurance liability valuation. It will assess how differences in the determination of contract boundaries influence the estimated value of future life insurance obligations. The study will also examine how the inclusion or exclusion of future contractual cash flows affects actuarial liability values under different life insurance policy conditions. The study will focus on insurance contract boundaries, life insurance liability valuation, future cash flows, policy duration, premium payments, benefit payments, insurance expenses, actuarial liabilities, mortality assumptions, interest rate assumptions, and liability measurement. Different contract boundary conditions will be analysed to determine their effects on the projected cash flows and resulting liability values. Actuarial valuation techniques will be applied to assess the financial implications of alternative boundary determinations. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be obtained from life insurance policy records, contractual terms, premium schedules, benefit structures, expected claims, expense information, mortality assumptions, and discount rate assumptions. Actuarial present value calculations, descriptive analysis, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be used to evaluate differences in liability values resulting from alternative contract boundaries. The study is expected to reveal that insurance contract boundaries have a measurable effect on life insurance liability valuation. Broader contract boundaries may include additional future premiums, benefits, claims, and expenses in the valuation, thereby changing the estimated liability. The study may also show that the magnitude and direction of the effect depend on policy duration, contractual provisions, expected cash flows, mortality assumptions, and discount rates. The findings are expected to be useful to actuaries, life insurance companies, financial reporting professionals, regulators, underwriters, and researchers. A clear understanding of contract boundaries can support consistent liability measurement, accurate actuarial valuation, financial reporting, and effective management of long-term insurance obligations. The findings may also assist insurers in assessing how contractual provisions influence the scope of cash flows included in liability calculations. The study concludes that insurance contract boundaries are an important consideration in life insurance liability valuation because they determine the future cash flows included in the measurement of contractual obligations. It is therefore recommended that insurers and actuaries apply clear and consistent criteria when determining contract boundaries and regularly review relevant policy conditions. Appropriate boundary determination may improve the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of life insurance liability valuations.
