Effect of Insurance Claim Reporting Delays on Claims Settlement Costs

Abstract

Insurance claim reporting is an important stage in the claims management process because the timing of notification can influence investigation, assessment, verification, and settlement activities. Delays in reporting claims may make it more difficult for insurers to obtain accurate information about the circumstances of a loss and may increase the resources required to process and settle claims. Understanding the relationship between claim reporting delays and claims settlement costs is therefore important for effective claims management and actuarial risk assessment. The study will examine the effect of insurance claim reporting delays on claims settlement costs. It will investigate whether the length of time between the occurrence of an insured event and the reporting of the claim is associated with variations in the cost incurred by insurers to investigate, process, and settle claims. The study will also examine patterns of settlement costs across different categories of reporting delays and determine whether longer reporting periods are associated with higher claims settlement expenses. The analysis will consider claim reporting intervals, claims settlement costs, claim severity, investigation requirements, and settlement duration. Reporting delays may be classified into appropriate time intervals to facilitate comparison of settlement costs across different groups. Statistical techniques will be used to examine the relationship between reporting delays and settlement costs while assessing the extent to which changes in reporting time are associated with differences in claims-related expenditure. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical insurance claims data containing information on the date of loss, date of claim notification, settlement costs, claim amounts, and other relevant claim characteristics will be collected and analysed. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize reporting delays and settlement costs, while appropriate inferential and regression techniques may be applied to determine the significance and direction of the relationship between the variables. The study is expected to reveal that differences in claim reporting times are associated with variations in claims settlement costs. Claims reported promptly may require fewer investigative resources and may be settled more efficiently, while claims reported after longer delays may involve additional verification, investigation, or administrative activities. However, the strength of this relationship may vary according to the type and characteristics of the insurance claims being analysed. The findings will be useful to insurance companies, actuaries, claims managers, underwriters, and risk management professionals. Understanding the effect of reporting delays on settlement costs may assist insurers in improving claims notification procedures, allocating claims management resources, controlling administrative expenses, and improving the efficiency of claims settlement. The findings may also provide useful information for developing effective claims reporting policies and monitoring unusual delays in claim notification. The study concludes that claim reporting delays can be an important consideration in the management and control of insurance claims settlement costs. It is therefore recommended that insurers strengthen claims reporting procedures, encourage timely notification of insured events, and monitor reporting delays as part of claims management and actuarial analysis. Effective management of reporting delays may contribute to faster claims processing, better cost control, and improved overall claims settlement efficiency.
