Abstract

The study examines the effect of healthcare provider charges on health insurance loss ratios, focusing on how the costs imposed by healthcare providers influence the financial performance of health insurance schemes. Healthcare provider charges represent a significant component of medical claims expenditure, and changes in consultation fees, diagnostic costs, treatment charges, hospitalization expenses, and other healthcare service costs can directly affect insurers’ claims obligations. Understanding the relationship between provider charges and loss ratios is therefore important for effective health insurance pricing and financial management. The study will investigate how variations in healthcare provider charges affect the proportion of premium income used to settle insurance claims. Increases in provider charges may lead to higher claims costs and consequently increase loss ratios, particularly when premium adjustments do not correspond with rising healthcare expenses. The study will also examine how changes in provider charges may influence claim severity and the overall level of claims expenditure incurred by health insurers. The study will further consider the implications of healthcare provider charges for premium adequacy and insurance profitability. Where healthcare costs continue to increase, insurers may experience difficulty maintaining favorable loss ratios if they are unable to control claims expenditure or adjust premiums appropriately. Effective monitoring of provider charges is therefore essential for insurers seeking to maintain financial stability while continuing to provide adequate healthcare coverage to policyholders. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant data on healthcare provider charges, health insurance premiums, claims expenditure, claim frequency, claim severity, and loss ratios will be obtained from appropriate health insurance records and other relevant sources. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistical techniques, including correlation and regression analysis, will be employed to examine the relationship between healthcare provider charges and health insurance loss ratios. The study is expected to find that healthcare provider charges have a significant effect on health insurance loss ratios. Higher provider charges are expected to increase claims expenditure and claim severity, resulting in higher loss ratios where premium income does not increase proportionately. The study may also reveal that insurers with effective mechanisms for monitoring provider charges are better positioned to control claims costs and maintain more favorable loss ratios. The study is further expected to establish that proper management of healthcare provider charges can improve claims control and contribute to the financial sustainability of health insurance schemes. Negotiation of provider tariffs, regular monitoring of healthcare costs, effective claims assessment, and appropriate premium adjustments are expected to help insurers manage increasing medical expenses and reduce unfavorable movements in loss ratios. The study concludes that healthcare provider charges are an important factor influencing health insurance loss ratios and should be given adequate consideration in actuarial analysis and insurance decision-making. It is therefore recommended that health insurers strengthen provider cost monitoring, improve claims management practices, regularly evaluate healthcare expenditure trends, and incorporate changes in provider charges into premium pricing and risk assessment to ensure sustainable health insurance operations.
