Effect of Guaranteed Conversion Terms on Term Assurance Valuation

Abstract

Guaranteed conversion terms are provisions in term assurance contracts that give policyholders the right to convert an existing term assurance policy into another form of life insurance coverage under specified contractual conditions. These provisions can affect the expected duration of coverage, future premium payments, benefit obligations, and policyholder behaviour. As a result, guaranteed conversion terms may have important implications for the actuarial valuation of term assurance contracts. This study examines the effect of guaranteed conversion terms on term assurance valuation. It will assess how the availability and structure of guaranteed conversion rights influence the actuarial value of term assurance policies. The study will also examine the relationship between conversion periods, policyholder age, remaining policy term, benefit amounts, premium payments, and the resulting value of the insurance contract. The study will focus on actuarial factors including conversion eligibility periods, conversion rates, policy duration, age at conversion, mortality assumptions, interest rates, premium levels, and expected benefit payments. Actuarial valuation techniques will be applied to estimate the present value of future benefits and premiums under different guaranteed conversion conditions and to assess changes in the financial value of term assurance contracts. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant term assurance policy data, conversion experience, premium information, benefit amounts, mortality assumptions, and interest rate data will be obtained from appropriate insurance and actuarial sources. Actuarial present value calculations, comparative analysis, sensitivity analysis, descriptive statistics, and regression techniques will be used to evaluate the effect of guaranteed conversion terms on term assurance valuation. The study is expected to find that guaranteed conversion terms may produce measurable changes in term assurance values. Broader conversion rights or longer conversion periods may increase the expected future obligations of insurers by allowing policyholders to continue or modify their coverage under specified conditions. The effect may vary according to policyholder age, conversion timing, mortality assumptions, premium differences, and the remaining duration of the original term assurance contract. The findings may be useful to actuaries, life insurance companies, product developers, underwriters, and financial managers. Understanding the valuation implications of guaranteed conversion terms can support more accurate premium determination, reserve estimation, liability management, and product design. It may also assist insurers in incorporating policyholder conversion behaviour and contractual options into actuarial valuation models. The study concludes that guaranteed conversion terms are relevant considerations in the actuarial valuation of term assurance contracts. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate realistic conversion assumptions and contractual conditions into valuation models. Regular analysis of conversion experience may improve the accuracy of liability estimates, premium calculations, and long-term financial management of term assurance products.
