Effect of Data Completeness on Insurance Pricing Accuracy

Abstract

The study examines the effect of data completeness on insurance pricing accuracy, focusing on how the availability of complete, relevant, and reliable insurance data influences the accuracy of premium determination. Insurance pricing depends heavily on the quality of information available to insurers when estimating expected losses and assessing policyholder risks. Incomplete data may limit the ability of insurers to accurately evaluate risks and may result in premiums that do not adequately reflect the underlying level of risk. The study will investigate the effect of data completeness on insurance pricing accuracy by examining how the availability of complete customer, policy, claims, and exposure information influences actuarial pricing decisions. It will assess whether comprehensive historical data improve the estimation of claims frequency, claims severity, expected losses, and other pricing assumptions. The study will also consider the extent to which missing or incomplete information may affect the reliability of insurance pricing models. The study will further examine factors that influence data completeness and their implications for insurance pricing. Particular attention will be given to the accuracy of customer records, completeness of claims histories, consistency of policy information, availability of exposure data, and proper documentation of insurance transactions. Understanding these factors may help insurers identify data deficiencies that could lead to inaccurate risk assessment and inappropriate premium rates. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Actuarial pricing measures may also be used to evaluate differences between estimated and actual claims outcomes. The study is expected to reveal that data completeness has a significant effect on insurance pricing accuracy. More complete datasets are expected to support more reliable estimation of expected losses and improve the accuracy of premium rates. The findings may also indicate that missing or inconsistent data can create uncertainty in actuarial models, resulting in premiums that may be inadequate for higher-risk policyholders or unnecessarily high for lower-risk policyholders. The study is further expected to establish that improving data completeness can strengthen actuarial pricing, underwriting decisions, and overall risk management. The findings may assist insurers in developing stronger data collection procedures, improving record management, integrating relevant data sources, and regularly reviewing the completeness of information used in pricing models. Better data practices may also reduce pricing uncertainty and improve the financial performance of insurance portfolios. The study concludes that data completeness is an important determinant of insurance pricing accuracy because reliable pricing decisions depend on the availability of sufficient and relevant risk information. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies strengthen data collection, validation, storage, and quality-control processes and ensure that actuarial pricing models are based on sufficiently complete datasets. These measures will help improve premium accuracy, strengthen risk classification, and support sustainable insurance operations.
