Comparative Analysis of Claims Reserving Methods
Abstract
The study examines the comparative analysis of claims reserving methods, with emphasis on the techniques used by insurance companies to estimate future payments arising from claims that have occurred but remain unsettled. Claims reserves represent a major component of insurers’ liabilities, making accurate estimation important for financial reporting, solvency management, pricing decisions, and overall risk management. Differences in reserving methods can produce varying estimates, particularly when claims development patterns and historical claims experiences change over time. The study will investigate and compare selected claims reserving methods to determine their effectiveness in estimating outstanding insurance claims liabilities. Particular attention will be given to the Chain-Ladder method, Bornhuetter-Ferguson method, and other relevant actuarial reserving techniques. The study will assess the estimates generated by each method and examine their consistency, reliability, and suitability for different claims development circumstances. The study will further examine the assumptions, data requirements, and underlying principles associated with the selected reserving methods. Factors such as claims frequency, claims severity, reporting delays, settlement patterns, claims development, and changes in claims experience will be considered in assessing the performance of the different methods. The comparison will provide insight into the strengths and limitations of each technique and their implications for the adequacy of insurance reserves. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical insurance claims data will be analysed using claims development triangles, descriptive statistics, and selected actuarial reserving techniques. The study will compare the reserve estimates produced by the different methods using appropriate statistical and actuarial measures. Measures of estimation error, consistency, and reserve adequacy may also be applied to determine the relative performance of the methods. The study is expected to reveal noticeable differences in the outstanding claims estimates produced by the selected reserving methods. It is expected that the Chain-Ladder method may provide consistent estimates where historical claims development patterns remain relatively stable, while the Bornhuetter-Ferguson method may provide more suitable estimates where claims experience is less developed or more uncertain. The findings may also indicate that the choice of reserving method has an important influence on the level of estimated insurance liabilities. The study is further expected to establish that no single claims reserving method is universally appropriate for all insurance portfolios and claims environments. The reliability of a reserving technique may depend on the quality of available data, stability of claims development patterns, nature of the insurance business, and assumptions adopted during estimation. A comparative assessment of alternative methods may therefore assist insurers in selecting techniques that provide more reliable and adequate claims reserves. The study concludes that comparative analysis of claims reserving methods is important for improving the accuracy and reliability of insurance reserve estimation. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies evaluate alternative reserving techniques regularly, maintain accurate and comprehensive claims databases, review actuarial assumptions as claims experience develops, and use appropriate actuarial methods to support adequate reserving, financial planning, and effective risk management.
