Impact of Undergraduate Accounting Conferences on Students’ Knowledge of Contemporary Accounting Issues in Nigeria

Abstract

Contemporary accounting issues are increasingly important to Accounting Education students because changes in technology, financial reporting practices, taxation, auditing, corporate governance, sustainability reporting, digital finance, and professional standards continue to reshape the accounting profession. Undergraduate Accounting Conferences provide students with opportunities to interact with accounting educators, professional accountants, researchers, industry practitioners, regulators, and fellow students while gaining exposure to emerging developments in the accounting profession. Such conferences may broaden students’ knowledge beyond conventional classroom instruction by exposing them to current accounting practices, professional discussions, research findings, regulatory developments, technological innovations, and practical challenges affecting the accounting profession in Nigeria. However, limited exposure to professional accounting events may restrict students’ awareness of contemporary accounting developments and their understanding of how accounting knowledge is applied in changing professional environments. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Undergraduate Accounting Conferences on students’ knowledge of contemporary accounting issues in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Learning Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students acquire knowledge through concrete experiences, reflection, conceptualization, and active participation. Social Learning Theory emphasizes learning through observation, interaction, modelling, professional exposure, and exchange of ideas with knowledgeable individuals. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in students’ knowledge and professional development enhances their competence, productivity, employability, and preparedness for future accounting responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how participation in Undergraduate Accounting Conferences may influence students’ knowledge of contemporary accounting issues. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The population will comprise undergraduate Accounting Education and related accounting students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, departments, levels of study, and eligible students. Undergraduate Accounting Conferences will be assessed using indicators such as conference participation, frequency of attendance, duration of participation, conference sessions attended, keynote presentations, technical sessions, panel discussions, paper presentations, workshops, practical demonstrations, professional interactions, networking activities, question-and-answer sessions, research presentations, case discussions, group activities, professional-body participation, interaction with accounting educators, interaction with professional accountants, interaction with auditors, interaction with tax practitioners, interaction with financial analysts, interaction with regulators, interaction with accounting researchers, exposure to industry practitioners, conference materials, conference proceedings, professional publications, accounting journals, presentation slides, digital resources, conference certificates, post-conference activities, student engagement, active participation, discussion participation, note-taking, reflective activities, follow-up learning, access to professional networks, exposure to accounting research, exposure to current accounting practices, exposure to accounting technology, exposure to professional standards, exposure to regulatory developments, and opportunities for professional development. Students’ knowledge of contemporary accounting issues will be assessed using indicators such as awareness of changes in accounting standards, financial reporting developments, International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), sustainability reporting, environmental accounting, social accounting, corporate governance, ethical accounting practices, accounting professionalism, audit developments, internal auditing, forensic accounting, fraud detection, fraud prevention, financial crime reporting, taxation developments, digital taxation, electronic tax administration, public-sector accounting reforms, public financial management, government accounting, budgetary control, financial accountability, digital accounting, accounting information systems, accounting software, cloud accounting, artificial intelligence in accounting, data analytics, blockchain technology, cybersecurity in accounting, electronic financial reporting, digital payments, fintech developments, electronic banking, financial technology risks, data privacy, information security, business intelligence, automation of accounting processes, robotic process automation, sustainability accounting, climate-related financial disclosures, environmental reporting, social responsibility reporting, integrated reporting, corporate social responsibility, risk management, corporate transparency, accountability, professional ethics, independence, auditor responsibility, audit quality, audit technology, continuous auditing, internal control developments, regulatory compliance, financial statement quality, earnings management, creative accounting, accounting fraud, professional judgement, financial reporting quality, revenue recognition, lease accounting, impairment accounting, asset valuation, inventory accounting, taxation of digital transactions, transfer pricing, international taxation, small-business accounting, entrepreneurship accounting, management accounting developments, strategic management accounting, cost management, performance measurement, budgeting, financial analysis, investment analysis, contemporary research findings, emerging accounting challenges, professional career developments, employability requirements, and other current accounting issues relevant to Nigeria. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, contemporary accounting knowledge assessment tests, conference attendance records, conference programmes, participation registers, and relevant academic or professional documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic characteristics, conference participation patterns, exposure to professional activities, and knowledge levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Undergraduate Accounting Conferences on students’ knowledge of contemporary accounting issues. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students’ contemporary accounting knowledge scores before and after conference participation may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with conference exposure. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Undergraduate Accounting Conferences have a significant positive impact on students’ knowledge of contemporary accounting issues in Nigeria. Students who participate actively in accounting conferences are expected to demonstrate greater awareness and understanding of emerging accounting developments than students with limited exposure to such professional events. Conference keynote presentations may broaden students’ understanding of major developments affecting the accounting profession. Technical sessions may provide detailed knowledge of contemporary accounting practices and professional challenges. Panel discussions may expose students to different perspectives from academics, practitioners, regulators, and professional accountants. Research presentations may strengthen students’ awareness of recent accounting research findings and emerging areas of investigation. Workshops and practical demonstrations may improve students’ understanding of the application of accounting concepts in professional settings. Interaction with professional accountants may expose students to current workplace practices and professional expectations. Engagement with auditors may improve awareness of contemporary auditing practices, audit technology, internal controls, forensic accounting, fraud detection, and audit quality. Interaction with tax practitioners may strengthen knowledge of taxation developments, digital taxation, and electronic tax administration. Exposure to regulators may improve students’ understanding of accounting regulations, compliance requirements, professional standards, and financial reporting developments. Interaction with researchers may strengthen students’ awareness of emerging accounting research and unresolved professional issues. Exposure to industry practitioners may improve students’ understanding of how accounting practices respond to technological and business changes. Conference materials may provide additional sources of contemporary accounting knowledge. Professional publications and conference proceedings may improve students’ access to current accounting information. Digital conference resources may expand students’ opportunities for continued learning after conference participation. Discussions and question-and-answer sessions may strengthen students’ ability to clarify complex contemporary accounting issues. Networking activities may provide opportunities for students to obtain professional information and career guidance. Exposure to accounting research may improve students’ awareness of current scholarly debates. Exposure to accounting technology may strengthen knowledge of digital accounting systems, accounting software, artificial intelligence, blockchain, data analytics, cloud accounting, automation, and cybersecurity. Exposure to professional standards may improve understanding of changes in financial reporting requirements. Exposure to sustainability reporting may increase awareness of environmental, social, and governance-related reporting developments. Discussions on corporate governance may strengthen students’ understanding of transparency, accountability, ethics, and organizational oversight. Sessions on forensic accounting may improve knowledge of fraud investigation and financial crime detection. Contemporary auditing sessions may strengthen awareness of continuous auditing, technology-assisted auditing, audit quality, and professional independence. Public-sector accounting discussions may improve understanding of public financial management, budgetary control, accountability, and government accounting reforms. Taxation sessions may strengthen awareness of digital tax administration, electronic tax systems, and emerging tax challenges. Management accounting sessions may improve students’ understanding of strategic cost management, performance measurement, budgeting, and decision-support practices. Financial reporting discussions may strengthen knowledge of emerging reporting requirements and financial statement quality. Ethical-accounting sessions may improve students’ understanding of professional conduct, integrity, independence, and ethical decision-making. Discussions on creative accounting and earnings management may improve students’ ability to recognize problematic financial reporting practices. Sessions on financial technology may strengthen awareness of fintech opportunities and associated risks. Cybersecurity discussions may improve students’ understanding of threats to accounting information systems and financial data. Artificial-intelligence presentations may increase awareness of the changing role of technology in accounting activities. Blockchain discussions may improve students’ understanding of emerging transaction-recording and verification technologies. Data-analytics sessions may strengthen knowledge of how accounting professionals use data for financial analysis, audit, risk management, and decision-making. Sustainability-accounting discussions may improve students’ awareness of environmental and social reporting requirements. Integrated-reporting sessions may strengthen understanding of how financial and non-financial information can be combined in corporate reporting. Professional-development activities may improve students’ awareness of current employability expectations within the accounting profession. Career discussions may help students understand emerging accounting roles and professional opportunities. Conference participation may therefore enhance students’ ability to connect classroom accounting knowledge with current professional developments. However, the effectiveness of Undergraduate Accounting Conferences may be constrained by high participation costs, transportation expenses, registration fees, limited institutional funding, inadequate awareness of conference opportunities, scheduling conflicts with academic activities, limited access to professional speakers, inadequate conference facilities, poor internet connectivity during hybrid or virtual conferences, unreliable electricity supply, insufficient student participation, passive attendance, limited opportunities for interaction, inadequate follow-up activities, limited access to conference materials, and inadequate integration of conference experiences into university accounting curricula. The study therefore expects well-organized, accessible, professionally relevant, interactive, research-oriented, and adequately supported Undergraduate Accounting Conferences to contribute significantly to improved knowledge of contemporary accounting issues among accounting students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Undergraduate Accounting Conferences, contemporary accounting issues, accounting education, professional accounting education, experiential learning, social learning, human capital development, accounting standards, IFRS, sustainability reporting, corporate governance, auditing, forensic accounting, taxation, public-sector accounting, digital accounting, accounting information systems, artificial intelligence in accounting, blockchain technology, accounting data analytics, cloud accounting, fintech, cybersecurity, financial reporting, management accounting, professional ethics, financial accountability, accounting research, professional development, employability, and accounting education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, faculties and departments of accounting, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, accounting researchers, conference organizers, employers, regulators, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students’ exposure to contemporary accounting developments. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Undergraduate Accounting Conferences into accounting education programmes, increasing institutional support for student participation, improving access to professional accounting events, strengthening interaction between students and accounting professionals, providing conference-based learning activities, encouraging student participation in research and professional discussions, improving access to conference proceedings and digital resources, establishing structured post-conference learning activities, and aligning university accounting education with contemporary developments and professional requirements in Nigeria.
