Impact of Three-Column Cash Book Exercises on Students’ Cash and Bank Recording Skills in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Cash and bank recording skills are essential competencies in accounting education because accounting personnel are expected to record cash receipts, cash payments, bank transactions, discounts allowed, discounts received, and related financial activities accurately. The three-column cash book provides a practical accounting tool for recording cash, bank, and discount transactions while supporting effective transaction classification, balancing, and reconciliation. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities may experience difficulties in applying three-column cash book procedures accurately when practical exposure is limited. Three-Column Cash Book Exercises provide students with opportunities to practise recording realistic cash and banking transactions, balancing accounts, identifying contra entries, and handling discount transactions. Such practical exercises may strengthen students’ accuracy, analytical ability, and competence in managing cash and bank records. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Three-Column Cash Book Exercises on students’ cash and bank recording skills in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop accounting competencies through direct practical experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and practical skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional accounting responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Three-Column Cash Book Exercises may influence students’ cash and bank recording skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, three-column cash book skills assessment scales, practical cash book exercises, transaction-recording tasks, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Three-Column Cash Book Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as identification of cash transactions, identification of bank transactions, identification of discount transactions, cash-column recording, bank-column recording, discount-allowed recording, discount-received recording, opening-balance recording, cash receipts, cash payments, bank receipts, bank payments, cheque transactions, cash withdrawals, bank deposits, direct bank payments, bank transfers, customer payments, supplier payments, discount calculations, discount classification, contra-entry identification, contra-entry recording, cash-book narration, transaction-date recording, transaction-reference recording, source-document interpretation, transaction classification, debit-side recording, credit-side recording, appropriate-column selection, transaction amount recording, balancing procedures, cash-balance calculation, bank-balance calculation, discount-total calculation, balancing-off procedures, carry-forward procedures, brought-forward procedures, correction of errors, omission-error identification, commission-error identification, transposition-error identification, incorrect-column identification, incorrect-amount identification, duplicate-entry identification, unauthorized-entry identification, incomplete-entry identification, cash-book review, bank-record comparison, cash-book reconciliation, bank reconciliation, supporting-document verification, transaction verification, internal-control procedures, authorization procedures, documentation procedures, record filing, record retrieval, accounting-software activities, spreadsheet-based cash book preparation, digital transaction recording, electronic cash book preparation, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, case studies, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging cash book scenarios. Students’ cash and bank recording skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify cash transactions, recognize bank transactions, identify discount transactions, record cash receipts, record cash payments, record bank receipts, record bank payments, record discounts allowed, record discounts received, record opening balances, record cheque transactions, record cash withdrawals, record bank deposits, record direct bank payments, record bank transfers, record customer payments, record supplier payments, calculate discounts accurately, classify discounts correctly, identify contra entries, record contra entries, provide appropriate narrations, record transaction dates, record references, interpret source documents, classify transactions correctly, record debit entries, record credit entries, select appropriate cash book columns, record transaction amounts accurately, balance cash columns, balance bank columns, calculate discount totals, balance off accounts, carry balances forward, bring balances down, correct errors, identify omissions, detect commission errors, detect transposition errors, identify incorrect-column entries, identify incorrect amounts, detect duplicate entries, identify unauthorized entries, identify incomplete records, review cash books, compare cash book and bank records, perform cash book reconciliation, perform bank reconciliation, verify supporting documents, verify transactions, apply internal controls, follow authorization procedures, maintain documentation, organize accounting records, retrieve financial records, use accounting software, prepare cash books using spreadsheets, record digital transactions, prepare electronic cash books, demonstrate accuracy, demonstrate numerical competence, demonstrate accounting competence, demonstrate attention to detail, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate efficiency, demonstrate digital competence, demonstrate accountability, demonstrate responsibility, demonstrate professionalism, demonstrate adaptability, and overall cash and bank recording competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Three-Column Cash Book Exercises, practical experiences, and cash and bank recording skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Three-Column Cash Book Exercises on students’ cash and bank recording skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, cash and bank recording skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Three-Column Cash Book Exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ cash and bank recording skills in Nigerian universities.
