Impact of Professional Email-Writing Exercises on Students’ Business Communication Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Business communication skills are essential competencies for Accounting Education students because accounting professionals routinely use electronic communication to exchange financial information, respond to enquiries, communicate with clients and colleagues, transmit documents, coordinate activities, and maintain professional relationships. Professional email writing requires students to communicate information clearly, accurately, concisely, and appropriately while observing professional tone, structure, etiquette, confidentiality, and digital communication standards. However, some Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities may have limited opportunities to practise authentic professional email writing during their academic training. Professional Email-Writing Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to compose, edit, evaluate, and revise emails based on realistic accounting and business situations. Through repeated practice and feedback, students may develop greater competence in communicating effectively through electronic platforms. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Professional Email-Writing Exercises on business communication skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Media Richness Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical communication competencies through concrete writing experiences, reflection, revision, and active application. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Media Richness Theory explains how communication effectiveness may depend on the suitability of a communication medium for the nature and complexity of the information being conveyed. Collectively, these theories provide a suitable framework for explaining how Professional Email-Writing Exercises may influence students’ business communication skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, business-communication skills assessment scales, professional email-writing tasks, email-performance rubrics, editing and proofreading exercises, simulated workplace correspondence, communication scenarios, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Professional Email-Writing Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as professional email composition, subject-line writing, professional greetings, salutations, email openings, purpose statements, message organization, paragraph development, information sequencing, concise writing, clear writing, accurate writing, professional tone, formal language, appropriate register, audience awareness, purpose awareness, context awareness, appropriate vocabulary, accounting terminology, financial terminology, business terminology, sentence construction, grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, pronoun use, active voice, passive voice where appropriate, coherence, cohesion, transitions, email closings, professional sign-offs, attachment referencing, attachment descriptions, document referencing, file naming, email forwarding, email replying, email copying, carbon-copy use, blind-carbon-copy use, email-thread management, response timing, follow-up emails, reminder emails, enquiry responses, complaint responses, payment reminders, invoice communication, receipt communication, billing communication, account communication, client communication, customer communication, supplier communication, employer communication, colleague communication, supervisor communication, meeting communication, appointment communication, recruitment communication, administrative communication, financial communication, accounting communication, audit communication, taxation communication, banking communication, procurement communication, payroll communication, internal communication, external communication, confidential communication, sensitive-information communication, email etiquette, digital etiquette, professional courtesy, respectful communication, appropriate response strategies, clarification requests, information requests, information provision, problem explanation, solution communication, service communication, escalation communication, referral communication, workplace communication scenarios, simulated accounting-office email activities, individual writing exercises, group writing exercises, guided writing, model-email analysis, email editing, proofreading, peer review, lecturer feedback, self-assessment, repeated writing practice, progressive writing tasks, scenario-based writing, error-correction exercises, and technology-supported writing activities. Students’ business communication skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify the purpose of an email, identify the intended recipient, understand the communication context, select an appropriate subject line, use professional greetings, introduce the purpose clearly, organize information logically, communicate financial information accurately, explain accounting information clearly, use appropriate business terminology, use accounting terminology correctly, maintain professional tone, adapt language to the audience, communicate concisely, communicate completely, maintain grammatical accuracy, apply correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalization, construct effective sentences, develop coherent paragraphs, use appropriate transitions, maintain logical flow, write appropriate email openings, write appropriate closings, use professional sign-offs, reference attachments correctly, describe attachments clearly, manage email threads appropriately, respond to emails professionally, forward emails appropriately, use copy recipients appropriately, use blind-copy functions appropriately, respond within appropriate timeframes, prepare follow-up emails, prepare reminder emails, respond to enquiries, respond to complaints, communicate payment information, communicate invoice information, communicate receipt information, communicate billing information, communicate account information, communicate with clients, communicate with customers, communicate with suppliers, communicate with employers, communicate with colleagues, communicate with supervisors, communicate meeting information, communicate appointment information, communicate recruitment information, communicate administrative information, communicate financial information, communicate accounting information, communicate audit information, communicate taxation information, communicate banking information, communicate procurement information, communicate payroll information, maintain confidentiality, protect sensitive financial information, observe digital communication etiquette, demonstrate professional courtesy, request clarification appropriately, request information appropriately, provide information appropriately, explain problems clearly, communicate solutions effectively, escalate issues appropriately, refer matters to appropriate personnel, maintain professional relationships, demonstrate audience awareness, demonstrate contextual awareness, demonstrate communication judgement, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate digital competence, demonstrate responsiveness, demonstrate professionalism, demonstrate accuracy, demonstrate clarity, demonstrate conciseness, and overall business communication competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Professional Email-Writing Exercises, writing experiences, and business communication skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Professional Email-Writing Exercises on students’ business communication skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, business-communication skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Professional Email-Writing Exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ business communication skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured professional email-writing exercises are expected to demonstrate improved ability to communicate clearly, accurately, concisely, and professionally through electronic platforms. Subject-line exercises may improve students’ ability to communicate the purpose of messages effectively. Greeting, salutation, opening, and closing exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of professional email etiquette. Message-organization activities may improve students’ ability to present information logically and coherently. Concise-writing exercises may help students communicate important information without unnecessary repetition. Accounting and financial email-writing activities may strengthen students’ ability to communicate financial information accurately. Client and customer email simulations may improve students’ ability to respond to enquiries, requests, and concerns professionally. Supplier and employer communication exercises may strengthen students’ ability to maintain appropriate business relationships. Invoice, receipt, billing, payment, account, payroll, procurement, banking, audit, taxation, and financial-report email activities may expose students to practical accounting-related communication. Complaint-response exercises may improve students’ ability to respond to dissatisfied customers respectfully and appropriately. Payment-reminder activities may strengthen students’ ability to communicate outstanding obligations professionally. Follow-up and reminder exercises may improve students’ ability to maintain communication and monitor unresolved matters. Meeting and appointment emails may strengthen students’ ability to communicate schedules and administrative information. Recruitment and employment correspondence may expose students to professional communication associated with workplace opportunities. Grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and sentence-construction exercises may improve linguistic accuracy. Tone and register activities may strengthen students’ ability to distinguish professional communication from informal electronic messaging. Audience-awareness exercises may improve students’ ability to adapt messages to clients, supervisors, colleagues, suppliers, and other stakeholders. Purpose-awareness activities may strengthen students’ ability to select appropriate content and communication strategies. Attachment-referencing activities may improve students’ ability to transmit supporting documents appropriately. File-naming and document-referencing exercises may strengthen students’ ability to manage electronic business records. Email-thread management may improve students’ ability to maintain continuity in ongoing workplace communication. Copy and blind-copy exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of appropriate recipient management. Response-timing activities may improve students’ responsiveness. Confidentiality exercises may strengthen students’ ability to protect sensitive financial and business information. Clarification and information-request exercises may improve students’ ability to obtain missing information before taking action. Problem-explanation activities may strengthen students’ ability to communicate accounting or administrative problems clearly. Solution-communication activities may improve students’ ability to present appropriate responses to workplace issues. Escalation and referral exercises may strengthen students’ ability to direct complex matters to appropriate personnel. Peer review may expose students to alternative communication approaches. Lecturer feedback may help students identify weaknesses and improve subsequent writing. Repeated writing practice may increase students’ confidence, accuracy, speed, and independence. Scenario-based exercises may provide opportunities to apply email-writing skills to realistic accounting and business situations. However, the effectiveness of Professional Email-Writing Exercises may be constrained by limited access to computers and internet services, unreliable electricity supply, poor internet connectivity, large class sizes, inadequate lecturer feedback, limited exposure to authentic business correspondence, insufficient writing practice, students’ weak language foundations, inadequate digital-literacy skills, outdated instructional materials, limited access to professional email examples, low student participation, and weak integration of digital business communication into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects practical, structured, authentic, feedback-oriented, technology-supported, and adequately supervised Professional Email-Writing Exercises to contribute significantly to improved business communication skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Professional Email-Writing Exercises, business communication skills, Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Media Richness Theory, accounting education, business communication, professional communication, digital communication, workplace writing, email etiquette, electronic correspondence, accounting correspondence, financial communication, client communication, customer communication, supplier communication, employer communication, internal communication, external communication, professional writing, digital literacy, communication competence, employability skills, workplace readiness, Accounting Education students, Nigerian universities, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, communication-skills lecturers, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, employers, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students’ digital business communication competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Professional Email-Writing Exercises into Accounting Education programmes, providing authentic accounting and business email scenarios, strengthening professional email etiquette, improving students’ ability to communicate financial information electronically, incorporating editing and proofreading activities, strengthening digital communication skills, providing structured feedback and assessment, exposing students to contemporary workplace correspondence, expanding university-industry collaboration, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with modern business communication requirements in Nigeria.
