Impact of Practical Office Administration Training on Students’ Accounting Office Management Skills among HND Students in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Accounting office management skills are essential competencies for HND Accounting Education students because effective accounting offices depend on systematic organization, communication, record management, document processing, scheduling, coordination, confidentiality, and efficient handling of routine administrative activities. However, students may have limited opportunities to apply office administration principles in realistic accounting-office environments during their academic training. Practical Office Administration Training provides students with opportunities to perform simulated office duties, organize accounting documents, manage correspondence, handle information, coordinate office activities, and apply administrative procedures in practical situations. Such training may strengthen students’ ability to transfer theoretical knowledge into workplace-oriented accounting office management practices. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Practical Office Administration Training on accounting office management skills among HND students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through concrete experiences, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical skills can improve students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional employment. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Practical Office Administration Training may influence students’ accounting office management skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise HND Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, accounting office management skills assessment scales, practical office-administration tasks, observation checklists, performance rubrics, simulated accounting-office activities, document-management exercises, communication assessments, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Practical Office Administration Training will be assessed using indicators such as office organization, accounting-office layout, workstation organization, document handling, document classification, document sorting, document filing, document indexing, document retrieval, document tracking, correspondence management, letter preparation, memo preparation, email preparation, report preparation, notice preparation, circular preparation, telephone handling, message taking, appointment scheduling, diary management, meeting coordination, agenda preparation, minutes preparation, visitor reception, customer reception, client reception, enquiry handling, complaint handling, information management, record keeping, financial-record management, accounting-document management, invoice management, receipt management, voucher management, payment-document management, purchase-document management, sales-document management, payroll-document management, bank-document management, tax-document management, audit-document management, financial-report management, source-document management, transaction-document management, data entry, spreadsheet activities, accounting-software activities, electronic record keeping, digital document management, document scanning, document uploading, document downloading, document sharing, file naming, folder organization, data security, document confidentiality, access control, backup procedures, document retention, document archiving, document disposal, office supplies management, stationery management, equipment management, inventory of office materials, workflow management, task allocation, task prioritization, deadline management, workload management, multitasking, administrative coordination, information retrieval, internal communication, external communication, customer communication, client communication, supplier communication, supervisor communication, staff communication, professional etiquette, workplace confidentiality, internal-control procedures, authorization procedures, approval procedures, administrative problem-solving, workplace decision-making, conflict management, technology use, virtual-office activities, role-play activities, guided practice, individual practical exercises, group practical exercises, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging accounting-office tasks. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Practical Office Administration Training, practical experiences, and accounting office management skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Practical Office Administration Training on students’ accounting office management skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, accounting office management skill scores before and after participation in the training may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Practical Office Administration Training has a significant positive impact on accounting office management skills among HND students in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured practical office administration training are expected to demonstrate improved ability to organize accounting offices, manage documents, communicate professionally, maintain records, coordinate administrative activities, and use office technologies. Office-organization exercises may improve students’ ability to arrange workstations and accounting-office resources efficiently. Document-classification and sorting activities may strengthen students’ ability to organize accounting records systematically. Filing, indexing, retrieval, and tracking exercises may improve students’ ability to manage and locate documents efficiently. Correspondence activities may strengthen students’ ability to prepare professional letters, memos, emails, reports, notices, and circulars. Telephone-handling exercises may improve students’ ability to receive calls, take messages, transfer calls, and communicate professionally. Appointment and diary-management activities may strengthen students’ scheduling and coordination skills. Meeting activities may improve students’ ability to prepare agendas, record minutes, and coordinate follow-up activities. Reception exercises may strengthen students’ ability to receive visitors, customers, and clients appropriately. Enquiry and complaint-handling activities may improve students’ ability to respond to stakeholders professionally. Information-management activities may strengthen students’ ability to organize, retrieve, and communicate office information. Financial-record management activities may improve students’ ability to maintain accounting records systematically. Accounting-document activities involving invoices, receipts, vouchers, payment documents, purchase documents, sales documents, payroll documents, bank documents, tax documents, audit documents, financial reports, source documents, and transaction documents may strengthen students’ practical document-management competence. Data-entry exercises may improve accuracy in recording office information. Spreadsheet activities may strengthen students’ ability to organize and process accounting information.
