Impact of Employability Skills Training on Job Readiness among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Employability skills are essential competencies that enable Accounting Education students to transition successfully from academic training into the workplace. Beyond technical accounting knowledge, employers increasingly expect graduates to demonstrate communication, teamwork, problem-solving, digital competence, adaptability, time management, professionalism, and other workplace-related skills. However, some Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may experience difficulties translating their academic knowledge into workplace readiness because of limited exposure to structured employability skills training and practical workplace-oriented activities. Employability Skills Training provides opportunities for students to develop and practise competencies required for employment, including communication, collaboration, problem-solving, professional behaviour, digital skills, career management, and workplace adaptability. Such training may improve students’ confidence and preparedness to enter employment and perform effectively in accounting-related roles. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Employability Skills Training on job readiness among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Human Capital Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Experiential Learning Theory. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in knowledge, skills, and competencies increases individuals’ productivity and employment potential. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, practice, feedback, self-efficacy, and interaction with the learning environment. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop workplace competencies through practical experiences, reflection, application, and repeated practice. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Employability Skills Training may influence job readiness among Accounting Education students. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Employability Skills Training will be assessed using indicators such as communication-skills training, verbal-communication activities, written-communication activities, email-writing practice, business-letter writing, report-writing practice, presentation skills, public-speaking activities, active-listening training, interpersonal-communication activities, teamwork training, group-work activities, collaboration exercises, leadership training, conflict-resolution activities, negotiation exercises, problem-solving training, critical-thinking activities, decision-making exercises, analytical-thinking activities, creativity activities, adaptability training, workplace-flexibility activities, time-management training, task-prioritization activities, deadline-management exercises, professional-conduct training, workplace-ethics activities, professional-attitude development, workplace-responsibility activities, customer-service training, client-relations activities, workplace-behaviour training, digital-literacy training, computer-skills training, spreadsheet training, accounting-software training, accounting-information-system training, online-collaboration training, digital-communication training, information-search training, data-management training, cybersecurity awareness, technology-adaptation activities, career-planning activities, career-awareness sessions, job-search training, vacancy-search activities, career-guidance sessions, curriculum-vitae preparation, résumé-writing activities, cover-letter writing, job-application practice, interview preparation, mock interviews, interview-question practice, interview-response training, professional-networking activities, personal-branding activities, LinkedIn-profile development, workplace-research activities, employer-engagement activities, professional-accountant interaction, industry visits, workplace seminars, career fairs, internship preparation, industrial-training preparation, workplace-orientation activities, professional-certification awareness, professional-body engagement, mentoring activities, workplace simulations, role-play activities, business-case activities, accounting-workplace scenarios, project-based learning, practical assignments, workplace problem-solving activities, peer learning, instructor demonstrations, coaching, mentoring, feedback, self-assessment, employability workshops, career workshops, professional-development seminars, workplace-readiness programmes, competency assessments, skills portfolios, reflective activities, practical presentations, group projects, individual projects, workplace documentation activities, professional communication exercises, workplace etiquette training, business-meeting simulations, teamwork simulations, leadership simulations, customer-interaction simulations, workplace-conflict simulations, decision-making simulations, problem-solving simulations, office-technology practice, accounting-software practice, spreadsheet exercises, digital-accounting activities, remote-work skills training, virtual-meeting practice, online-collaboration activities, professional-information searching, workplace-data analysis, professional-writing practice, workplace-report preparation, business-presentation activities, entrepreneurial skills activities, self-management training, resilience training, stress-management activities, workplace-learning activities, continuous-learning activities, and opportunities for repeated application of employability skills in realistic workplace situations. Job readiness will be assessed using indicators such as understanding of workplace expectations, confidence in performing job duties, ability to communicate professionally, ability to work effectively in teams, ability to solve workplace problems, ability to make appropriate workplace decisions, ability to manage time effectively, ability to meet deadlines, ability to adapt to workplace changes, ability to demonstrate professional behaviour, ability to communicate with clients and colleagues, ability to prepare professional correspondence, ability to write business reports, ability to deliver professional presentations, ability to participate in meetings, ability to demonstrate workplace etiquette, ability to demonstrate ethical conduct, ability to use computers effectively, ability to use spreadsheets, ability to use accounting software, ability to use digital communication tools, ability to search for professional information, ability to manage digital information, ability to use online collaboration platforms, ability to adapt to new technologies, ability to prepare a curriculum vitae, ability to write job applications, ability to prepare cover letters, ability to search for employment opportunities, ability to identify suitable job vacancies, ability to prepare for interviews, ability to respond appropriately to interview questions, ability to participate confidently in mock interviews, ability to demonstrate professional self-presentation, ability to network professionally, ability to communicate personal competencies, ability to identify career opportunities, ability to identify relevant professional qualifications, ability to understand employer expectations, ability to demonstrate workplace responsibility, ability to demonstrate initiative, ability to work independently, ability to work collaboratively, ability to accept feedback, ability to learn from workplace experiences, ability to manage unfamiliar tasks, ability to handle workplace pressure, ability to prioritize tasks, ability to organize work activities, ability to complete assigned tasks accurately, ability to meet workplace standards, ability to apply accounting knowledge to workplace situations, ability to analyse workplace accounting problems, ability to make short-term work decisions, ability to demonstrate practical accounting competence, ability to handle workplace documentation, ability to communicate with customers and clients, ability to demonstrate professionalism during workplace interactions, ability to use workplace technology, ability to respond to workplace changes, ability to demonstrate confidence in professional settings, ability to demonstrate employability competencies, ability to transition from school to work, ability to identify personal strengths and weaknesses, ability to identify skill gaps, ability to develop professional-development plans, ability to seek employment independently, ability to participate in recruitment processes, ability to demonstrate interview readiness, ability to demonstrate workplace adaptability, ability to demonstrate professional confidence, ability to demonstrate career-management competence, and overall job-readiness level. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Employability Skills Training, employability competencies, and levels of job readiness. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Employability Skills Training on job readiness. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students’ job-readiness scores before and after exposure to Employability Skills Training may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional academic instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Employability Skills Training has a significant positive impact on job readiness among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured employability training are expected to demonstrate greater confidence, workplace competence, career awareness, and preparedness for employment than students without comparable training. Communication-skills training may improve students’ ability to communicate clearly with employers, colleagues, clients, and customers. Verbal-communication activities may strengthen professional speaking skills, while written-communication activities may improve students’ ability to prepare business correspondence, reports, emails, and other workplace documents. Presentation and public-speaking activities may increase confidence in communicating accounting information. Active-listening training may improve students’ ability to understand instructions and respond appropriately to workplace needs. Teamwork and collaboration activities may prepare students to work effectively with colleagues from different backgrounds. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnics, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, career-services units, employers, professional accounting bodies, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students’ transition from education to employment. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Employability Skills Training into Accounting Education programmes, strengthening practical workplace-oriented learning, expanding industry partnerships, increasing employer engagement, providing career-guidance and mentoring services, incorporating communication and teamwork activities into accounting courses, strengthening digital and technology-related competencies, providing mock interviews and job-search training, improving students’ curriculum-vitae and application-writing skills, organizing career fairs and professional networking activities, expanding internship and industrial-training opportunities, incorporating workplace simulations and role-play activities, providing regular employability assessments and feedback, and aligning Accounting Education curricula with contemporary workplace expectations in Nigerian polytechnics.
