Impact of Cyber-Financial Awareness on Students’ Ability to Protect Financial Information in Nigerian Polytechnics

 

Abstract

Cyber-financial awareness has become increasingly important in accounting education as financial transactions, accounting records, banking activities, and business communications become more dependent on digital technologies. Accounting Education students are expected to understand the risks associated with electronic financial information and develop the ability to protect accounting records, banking information, payment details, passwords, and other sensitive financial data from unauthorized access, manipulation, loss, and cyber-related threats. However, inadequate awareness of cybersecurity practices, digital fraud, phishing, social engineering, weak password practices, unauthorized access, and unsafe handling of financial information may expose students to financial-information security risks. Cyber-Financial Awareness provides an opportunity to improve students’ understanding of digital financial risks and appropriate measures for protecting financial information. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Cyber-Financial Awareness on students’ ability to protect financial information in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Theory of Planned Behavior. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how students’ perceptions of the usefulness and ease of use of cybersecurity technologies and practices may influence their willingness to adopt appropriate financial-information protection measures. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, modelling, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and environmental influences in developing secure digital-financial practices. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how students’ attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions may influence their cybersecurity practices and willingness to protect financial information. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Cyber-Financial Awareness may influence students’ ability to protect financial information. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, cyber-financial awareness assessment scales, financial-information protection tests, cybersecurity scenario-based questions, practical security tasks, observation checklists, performance rubrics, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, financial-information protection scores before and after exposure to Cyber-Financial Awareness activities may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Cyber-Financial Awareness has a significant positive impact on students’ ability to protect financial information in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured cyber-financial awareness activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to recognize digital financial risks and apply appropriate information-protection measures. Awareness of financial-information security may improve students’ understanding of the importance of protecting accounting and banking records. Cybersecurity-threat awareness may strengthen students’ ability to identify potential threats before they result in financial or information loss. Phishing-awareness activities may improve students’ ability to recognize deceptive emails, messages, websites, and links designed to obtain sensitive information. Social-engineering awareness may strengthen students’ ability to identify attempts to manipulate individuals into disclosing confidential financial information. Password-security activities may improve students’ ability to create strong passwords, avoid password reuse, and maintain password confidentiality. Multi-factor authentication awareness may strengthen students’ ability to apply additional authentication measures when accessing financial accounts and digital systems. Personal identification number security may improve students’ ability to protect banking credentials. Electronic-banking security activities may strengthen students’ ability to protect internet- and mobile-banking information. Online-payment security activities may improve students’ ability to verify payment requests and protect transaction information. Financial-transaction security activities may strengthen students’ ability to identify suspicious transactions. Data-privacy awareness may improve students’ understanding of responsible handling of personal and financial information. Confidential-information handling activities may strengthen students’ ability to prevent unauthorized disclosure.
