Impact of Consumer Awareness Education on Students’ Ability to Evaluate Financial Service Providers in Nigeria

Abstract

Financial services have become increasingly important in the daily lives of students as they interact with banks, mobile money operators, payment platforms, digital lending services, insurance companies, investment platforms, and other financial service providers. However, students may have limited knowledge of how to assess the reliability, transparency, affordability, security, and suitability of financial service providers before using their services. Inadequate consumer awareness may expose students to misleading financial information, hidden charges, inappropriate products, weak data-protection practices, fraudulent schemes, and poor financial decisions. Consumer Awareness Education provides an opportunity to equip students with knowledge and practical skills for assessing financial products and service providers, understanding terms and conditions, comparing service charges, recognizing consumer rights, identifying warning signs, and making informed financial choices. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Consumer Awareness Education on students’ ability to evaluate financial service providers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Consumer Socialization Theory, Financial Literacy Theory, and Theory of Planned Behavior. Consumer Socialization Theory explains how individuals acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviours necessary for effective participation in the marketplace. Financial Literacy Theory emphasizes the importance of financial knowledge and understanding in making informed financial decisions. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how students’ attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions may influence their financial-service evaluation and consumer decisions. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Consumer Awareness Education may influence students’ ability to evaluate financial service providers. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise students enrolled in selected universities and polytechnics across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, institutions, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, consumer-awareness assessment scales, financial-service evaluation tasks, provider-comparison exercises, scenario-based questions, practical evaluation rubrics, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Consumer Awareness Education will be assessed using indicators such as awareness of financial service providers, financial products, provider registration and licensing, regulatory requirements, service terms and conditions, interest rates, service charges, transaction fees, account-maintenance fees, penalties, exchange rates, loan costs, insurance premiums, investment costs, hidden charges, disclosure requirements, privacy policies, data-protection practices, cybersecurity, fraud prevention, customer rights, complaint procedures, dispute-resolution mechanisms, service accessibility, customer support, provider reputation, service reliability, financial stability, transparency, product suitability, affordability, risks, benefits, exclusions, contractual obligations, advertising practices, promotional claims, consumer responsibilities, informed consent, comparison of providers, evaluation of digital financial services, mobile banking, electronic payment services, digital lending, insurance services, investment services, savings products, payment platforms, and financial technology services. Students’ ability to evaluate financial service providers will be assessed using indicators such as identifying legitimate providers, verifying provider credentials, checking regulatory status, comparing service terms, comparing fees and charges, assessing interest rates, evaluating loan costs, examining insurance premiums, assessing investment costs, identifying hidden charges, interpreting disclosure information, reviewing privacy policies, assessing data-protection practices, identifying cybersecurity measures, recognizing fraud risks, identifying misleading financial advertisements, evaluating promotional claims, assessing provider reputation, examining service reliability, evaluating customer support, assessing complaint-handling procedures, identifying dispute-resolution channels, comparing accessibility, assessing financial-service suitability, evaluating affordability, identifying product risks, identifying product benefits, recognizing exclusions, understanding contractual obligations, assessing consumer responsibilities, evaluating informed-consent requirements, comparing competing providers, evaluating mobile banking services, assessing electronic payment providers, evaluating digital lending platforms, assessing insurance providers, evaluating investment platforms, assessing savings products, evaluating payment platforms, assessing financial technology services, interpreting provider information, identifying relevant financial information, distinguishing reliable from unreliable information, detecting misleading information, evaluating financial-service quality, assessing value for money, making informed provider choices, explaining reasons for provider selection, applying consumer-protection principles, demonstrating financial judgement, demonstrating critical thinking, demonstrating financial awareness, and demonstrating responsible consumer decision-making. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, levels of consumer awareness, exposure to financial services, sources of financial information, and financial-service evaluation abilities. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Consumer Awareness Education on students’ ability to evaluate financial service providers. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students’ financial-service evaluation scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Consumer Awareness Education has a significant positive impact on students’ ability to evaluate financial service providers in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured consumer-awareness education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to assess the legitimacy, reliability, transparency, affordability, security, and suitability of financial service providers. Education may improve students’ ability to identify legitimate financial service providers and verify their credentials and regulatory status. Training on financial products and services may strengthen students’ understanding of the differences among banking, payment, lending, insurance, investment, savings, and financial-technology services. Activities involving terms and conditions may improve students’ ability to understand contractual obligations. Exercises involving interest rates and service charges may strengthen students’ ability to compare the cost of financial services. Training on transaction fees, account-maintenance charges, penalties, exchange rates, loan costs, insurance premiums, and investment charges may improve students’ ability to assess the overall cost of using financial services. Education on hidden charges and disclosure requirements may help students identify information that may not be immediately apparent in promotional materials. Privacy and data-protection activities may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate how providers handle personal and financial information. Cybersecurity and fraud-prevention education may improve students’ ability to recognize potential risks associated with financial-service providers. Consumer-rights education may strengthen students’ understanding of their rights when using financial products and services. Complaint-handling and dispute-resolution exercises may improve students’ ability to identify appropriate channels for resolving financial-service problems. Service-accessibility activities may strengthen students’ ability to consider convenience and availability when comparing providers. Customer-support evaluation may improve students’ ability to assess the responsiveness and quality of provider assistance. Provider-reputation activities may strengthen students’ ability to consider reliable evidence when evaluating financial institutions. Service-reliability exercises may improve students’ ability to assess consistency and dependability. Transparency activities may strengthen students’ ability to identify providers that clearly communicate relevant financial information. Product-suitability exercises may improve students’ ability to determine whether a financial service meets their individual needs and circumstances. Affordability assessment may strengthen students’ ability to determine whether financial products can be used without creating inappropriate financial burdens. Risk-and-benefit assessment may improve students’ ability to make balanced financial evaluations. Exclusion-related exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of limitations attached to financial products. Advertising-analysis activities may improve students’ ability to distinguish factual information from exaggerated promotional claims. Consumer-responsibility education may strengthen students’ understanding of their obligations when using financial services. Informed-consent activities may improve students’ ability to review relevant information before accepting financial products or services. Provider-comparison exercises may strengthen students’ ability to compare competing financial service providers systematically. Digital financial-service activities may improve students’ ability to evaluate mobile banking, electronic payment, digital lending, insurance, investment, savings, and other technology-supported financial services. Scenario-based exercises may strengthen students’ ability to apply consumer-awareness knowledge to realistic financial decisions. However, the effectiveness of Consumer Awareness Education may be constrained by limited access to reliable financial information, rapidly changing financial products, misleading online content, aggressive financial marketing, inadequate financial education programmes, low student participation, limited practical learning resources, insufficient exposure to real financial-service comparisons, digital misinformation, and limited understanding of regulatory and consumer-protection mechanisms. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, evidence-based, and sustained Consumer Awareness Education to contribute significantly to improved ability among students to evaluate financial service providers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Consumer Awareness Education, financial-service evaluation, consumer protection, financial literacy, financial education, financial decision-making, banking services, digital financial services, mobile banking, electronic payments, digital lending, insurance services, investment services, savings products, financial technology, consumer rights, financial-service transparency, cybersecurity awareness, fraud prevention, financial information, and responsible financial behaviour in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to financial regulatory and consumer-protection institutions, universities, polytechnics, financial service providers, educational administrators, financial educators, consumer organizations, student organizations, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholders regarding strategies for improving students’ capacity to make informed financial-service choices. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Consumer Awareness Education into student financial-literacy programmes, strengthening practical financial-service comparison activities, improving students’ awareness of consumer rights and responsibilities, promoting verification of financial service providers, strengthening understanding of financial-service costs and risks, improving awareness of privacy and cybersecurity, developing practical evaluation tools and scenario-based learning activities, and promoting responsible engagement with financial service providers among students in Nigeria.
