Impact of Business Incubation Programmes on Entrepreneurial Competence among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Entrepreneurial competence is increasingly important for Accounting Education students as graduates are expected not only to seek formal employment but also to identify business opportunities, establish and manage small enterprises, create employment, and apply accounting knowledge in entrepreneurial settings. Business incubation programmes provide structured support through entrepreneurship training, mentoring, business advisory services, networking opportunities, access to business resources, practical enterprise development activities, and exposure to real-world business operations. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited access to structured incubation experiences that enable them to translate accounting knowledge into entrepreneurial practice. This may create a gap between classroom learning and the competencies required to identify, develop, and manage viable business ventures. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Business Incubation Programmes on entrepreneurial competence among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Human Capital Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop entrepreneurial competencies through practical experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Human Capital Theory emphasizes the importance of investing in relevant knowledge, skills, and competencies to improve individuals’ productivity, employability, and economic participation. Social Cognitive Theory explains how observation, modelling, mentoring, feedback, self-efficacy, and environmental influences contribute to the development of entrepreneurial behaviour and competence. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Business Incubation Programmes may influence entrepreneurial competence among Accounting Education students. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Business Incubation Programmes will be assessed using indicators such as entrepreneurship training, business idea development, opportunity identification activities, business-plan development, entrepreneurial mentoring, business advisory services, enterprise management training, financial-management training, accounting and bookkeeping training, marketing training, customer-development activities, product-development activities, innovation activities, digital-business training, e-commerce activities, networking opportunities, access to incubator facilities, access to business information, access to technology, access to business resources, entrepreneurial workshops, practical business projects, business simulations, market research activities, pitching exercises, enterprise competitions, mentorship sessions, industry interaction, entrepreneur interaction, access to professional networks, business registration guidance, regulatory guidance, access to funding information, financial-literacy training, risk-management training, strategic-planning activities, business-model development, feasibility-study activities, business monitoring, performance evaluation, feedback activities, peer learning, collaborative enterprise activities, and continuous entrepreneurial support. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Business Incubation Programmes, entrepreneurial experiences, and levels of entrepreneurial competence. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Business Incubation Programmes on students’ entrepreneurial competence. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, entrepreneurial competence scores before and after participation in the incubation programme may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional entrepreneurship instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Business Incubation Programmes have a significant positive impact on entrepreneurial competence among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured incubation activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify business opportunities, develop viable business ideas, prepare business plans, manage financial resources, make informed business decisions, solve enterprise-related problems, and adapt to changing business conditions. Entrepreneurship-training activities may strengthen students’ understanding of entrepreneurial processes. Business-idea development exercises may improve their ability to generate and refine viable business concepts. Opportunity-identification activities may strengthen students’ ability to recognize unmet market needs. Business-plan development may improve planning, feasibility analysis, and strategic thinking. Entrepreneurial mentoring may strengthen students’ confidence, self-efficacy, decision-making, and practical understanding of business operations. Business advisory services may improve students’ ability to respond to enterprise-management challenges. Accounting and bookkeeping activities may strengthen their ability to apply accounting knowledge in managing business finances. Financial-management training may improve budgeting, cost management, cash-flow management, pricing, and financial decision-making. Marketing activities may strengthen students’ understanding of customers, markets, product positioning, and sales strategies. Product-development and innovation activities may improve creativity and the ability to develop market-oriented solutions. Digital-business and e-commerce activities may strengthen students’ ability to use technology in modern business operations. Networking opportunities may improve students’ communication, negotiation, relationship-building, and access to business information. Practical business projects may provide students with opportunities to apply accounting and entrepreneurial knowledge to realistic business situations. Business simulations may strengthen students’ decision-making and problem-solving abilities. Market-research activities may improve students’ ability to evaluate customer needs and market conditions. Pitching exercises may strengthen communication, presentation, persuasion, and business-idea articulation. Enterprise competitions may encourage creativity, initiative, confidence, and calculated risk-taking. Industry interaction may expose students to practical business practices and contemporary enterprise challenges. Access to professional networks may improve students’ ability to identify potential partners, customers, mentors, and business opportunities. Business-registration and regulatory guidance may strengthen students’ awareness of formal business requirements. Funding-information activities may improve students’ understanding of available financing opportunities. Risk-management training may strengthen students’ ability to identify and evaluate business risks. Strategic-planning activities may improve long-term business decision-making. Business-model development may strengthen students’ ability to connect products, customers, resources, activities, and revenue streams. Feasibility-study activities may improve students’ ability to assess the viability of proposed ventures. However, the effectiveness of Business Incubation Programmes may be constrained by inadequate incubation facilities, limited funding for student enterprises, insufficient access to modern business technologies, inadequate mentorship, limited availability of experienced entrepreneurs, weak university and industry collaboration, inadequate entrepreneurship laboratories, limited practical training periods, insufficient access to market information, poor internet connectivity, unreliable electricity supply, large student populations, inadequate business-development resources, limited access to finance, outdated instructional materials, insufficient follow-up support, low student participation, and weak integration of incubation activities into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects practical, structured, well-resourced, industry-linked, and adequately supervised Business Incubation Programmes to contribute significantly to improved entrepreneurial competence among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics.
