Impact of Accounting Verification Practicals on Students’ Ability to Detect Inaccurate Financial Records in Nigerian Universities

 

Abstract

Accurate financial records are essential for effective accounting, financial reporting, internal control, and organizational decision-making. Accounting personnel are expected to examine financial records, compare accounting entries with supporting documents, identify inconsistencies, and determine whether recorded financial information is complete and accurate. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities may have limited opportunities to engage in practical verification activities that expose them to realistic financial-record errors and discrepancies. Accounting Verification Practicals provide students with opportunities to examine simulated financial records, source documents, transaction entries, ledgers, cash records, invoices, receipts, vouchers, and other accounting information while applying verification procedures. Such practical activities may strengthen students’ ability to detect inaccurate financial records and improve their analytical, accounting, and problem-solving competencies. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Accounting Verification Practicals on students’ ability to detect inaccurate financial records in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and practical skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional accounting responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Verification Practicals may influence students’ ability to detect inaccurate financial records. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial-record verification skills assessment scales, simulated accounting records, source-document verification tasks, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, error-detection exercises, case scenarios, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, financial-record verification scores before and after participation in the practical activities may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Verification Practicals have a significant positive impact on students’ ability to detect inaccurate financial records in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured verification practicals are expected to demonstrate improved ability to examine, compare, validate, question, and correct accounting information. Source-document examination may improve students’ ability to establish whether financial records are supported by appropriate evidence. Receipt, invoice, voucher, and payment-document verification may strengthen students’ ability to identify inconsistencies between source documents and accounting entries. Transaction-date verification may improve students’ ability to identify records entered in inappropriate periods. Amount verification may strengthen students’ ability to identify incorrect financial figures. Account-number, payee, and supplier verification may improve students’ ability to determine whether transactions have been assigned to the correct accounts or parties. Transaction-description verification may strengthen students’ ability to identify unclear or inconsistent transaction information.
