Impact of Accounting Transaction Sequencing Exercises on Students’ Understanding of the Accounting Cycle in Nigerian Polytechnics

 

Abstract

Understanding the accounting cycle is an essential competency for Accounting Education students because accounting activities require transactions to be identified, analyzed, documented, recorded, classified, summarized, and reported in an appropriate sequence. The accounting cycle involves interconnected procedures such as source-document preparation, transaction analysis, journal entry, ledger posting, trial balance preparation, adjustment of accounts, preparation of financial statements, and closing of accounts. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may experience difficulties understanding the relationship and sequence of these procedures when instruction relies predominantly on theoretical explanations without sufficient practical activities. Accounting Transaction Sequencing Exercises provide students with opportunities to arrange accounting procedures and transactions in their correct order using realistic and simulated business situations. Such exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of the logical relationship among accounting procedures and improve their ability to follow the accounting cycle systematically. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Accounting Transaction Sequencing Exercises on students’ understanding of the accounting cycle in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Cognitive Load Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop accounting competencies through practical experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Cognitive Load Theory explains how organizing accounting procedures into manageable and logically ordered stages may reduce unnecessary cognitive demands and improve students’ ability to understand complex accounting processes. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, self-efficacy, and interaction in the development of students’ accounting knowledge and skills. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Transaction Sequencing Exercises may influence students’ understanding of the accounting cycle. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, accounting-cycle understanding assessment instruments, transaction-sequencing tasks, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, scenario-based accounting questions, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, accounting-cycle understanding scores before and after participation in the sequencing exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Transaction Sequencing Exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ understanding of the accounting cycle in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured transaction-sequencing exercises are expected to demonstrate improved ability to recognize, arrange, explain, and apply the stages of the accounting cycle. Transaction-identification exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of how business activities initiate accounting processes. Source-document recognition may improve students’ ability to identify the evidence required before transactions are recorded. Source-document preparation activities may strengthen students’ understanding of the relationship between business transactions and accounting records. Transaction-date identification may improve students’ understanding of the chronological nature of accounting records. Transaction-analysis activities may strengthen students’ ability to determine the accounts affected before recording transactions. Account-identification exercises may improve students’ ability to recognize appropriate accounts. Debit-and-credit determination may strengthen students’ understanding of the double-entry implications of transactions. Transaction-classification activities may improve students’ ability to distinguish different types of business transactions. Journal-entry sequencing exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of the chronological recording of transactions. Journal-recording activities may improve students’ ability to connect transaction analysis with journal entries. Ledger-posting sequencing may strengthen students’ understanding of how journal information moves into individual accounts. Ledger-updating activities may improve students’ ability to maintain accounting records systematically. Subsidiary-record sequencing may strengthen students’ understanding of detailed transaction records. Cash-book sequencing may improve students’ ability to recognize the appropriate position of cash records within the accounting process.
