Impact of Accounting Office Scenarios on Students’ Workplace Decision-Making Skills in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Workplace decision-making is an important professional competency for Accounting Education students because accounting personnel are frequently required to interpret financial information, evaluate alternatives, identify appropriate courses of action, resolve routine accounting problems, and make responsible decisions within organizational settings. However, students may have limited opportunities to experience realistic accounting-office situations during their academic training, which can create a gap between theoretical accounting knowledge and practical workplace decision-making. Accounting Office Scenarios provide students with simulated workplace situations that allow them to apply accounting knowledge, professional judgment, analytical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and ethical considerations when responding to realistic accounting-office challenges. Such scenario-based learning may strengthen students’ ability to assess information, evaluate alternatives, make appropriate decisions, and respond effectively to workplace situations. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Accounting Office Scenarios on students’ workplace decision-making skills in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Situated Learning Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop professional competencies through concrete experiences, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Situated Learning Theory emphasizes the importance of learning within realistic contexts that resemble the environments in which knowledge and skills will be applied. Social Cognitive Theory explains how students develop decision-making competencies through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, self-efficacy, and interaction with their learning environment. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Office Scenarios may influence students’ workplace decision-making skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, workplace decision-making skills assessment scales, accounting-office scenario tasks, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, case-based exercises, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Accounting Office Scenarios will be assessed using indicators such as transaction-processing scenarios, documentation scenarios, bookkeeping scenarios, cash-management scenarios, banking scenarios, payroll scenarios, inventory scenarios, purchasing scenarios, sales scenarios, expense scenarios, financial-reporting scenarios, budget scenarios, reconciliation scenarios, customer-service scenarios, supplier-management scenarios, workplace communication scenarios, deadline-management scenarios, accounting-error scenarios, internal-control scenarios, authorization scenarios, fraud-risk scenarios, ethical-decision scenarios, confidentiality scenarios, financial-information scenarios, audit-related scenarios, accounting-software scenarios, digital-record scenarios, electronic-payment scenarios, office-filing scenarios, records-management scenarios, task-prioritization scenarios, workload-management scenarios, conflict-resolution scenarios, problem-solving scenarios, team-decision scenarios, professional-judgment scenarios, policy-compliance scenarios, regulatory-compliance scenarios, resource-allocation scenarios, incomplete-information scenarios, conflicting-information scenarios, urgent-workplace scenarios, unexpected-event scenarios, customer-complaint scenarios, management-request scenarios, supervisory-review scenarios, approval scenarios, escalation scenarios, reporting scenarios, workplace-risk scenarios, professional-responsibility scenarios, accountability scenarios, decision alternatives, consequence evaluation, evidence evaluation, information verification, option comparison, decision selection, decision justification, decision implementation, decision review, feedback, reflection, individual exercises, group exercises, role-play activities, case studies, practical demonstrations, guided practice, repeated scenario exposure, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, and progressively challenging workplace situations. Students’ workplace decision-making skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify workplace problems, gather relevant information, verify accounting information, interpret financial records, distinguish relevant from irrelevant information, identify available alternatives, compare alternatives, evaluate potential consequences, assess risks, apply accounting principles, apply organizational policies, apply professional standards, consider ethical implications, select appropriate solutions, justify decisions, make timely decisions, make accurate decisions, prioritize tasks, allocate resources, resolve accounting problems, identify accounting errors, determine appropriate corrective actions, handle cash-management issues, respond to banking problems, resolve payroll discrepancies, manage inventory discrepancies, address purchasing issues, resolve sales-recording problems, evaluate expense claims, handle financial-reporting issues, respond to budget variances, resolve reconciliation differences, manage customer enquiries, respond to supplier issues, communicate decisions professionally, manage workplace deadlines, handle conflicting priorities, respond to urgent requests, apply internal controls, verify authorization, identify fraud risks, protect confidential information, maintain financial-data security, comply with organizational procedures, observe professional responsibilities, use accounting software, manage digital records, evaluate electronic transactions, organize accounting documents, manage office records, resolve workplace conflicts, collaborate with colleagues, exercise professional judgment, respond to incomplete information, manage uncertainty, handle unexpected situations, escalate matters appropriately, seek clarification when necessary, document decisions, report decisions, review outcomes, learn from mistakes, respond to feedback, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate accountability, demonstrate responsibility, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate critical thinking, demonstrate adaptability, demonstrate professionalism, demonstrate efficiency, demonstrate independence, and overall workplace decision-making competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Accounting Office Scenarios, practical experiences, and workplace decision-making skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Accounting Office Scenarios on students’ workplace decision-making skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, workplace decision-making skill scores before and after exposure to Accounting Office Scenarios may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Office Scenarios have a significant positive impact on students’ workplace decision-making skills in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to realistic and structured accounting-office scenarios are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify workplace problems, evaluate financial information, compare alternatives, assess risks, apply accounting principles, consider professional and ethical requirements, and select appropriate courses of action.
