Impact of Accounting Information Interpretation Skills on Students’ Business Decision-Making Competence in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Business decision-making competence is an important professional skill for Accounting Education students because accounting information provides the financial basis for evaluating business performance, identifying opportunities and risks, allocating resources, controlling costs, and making informed managerial decisions. Students are expected to interpret financial statements, accounting reports, budgets, cash-flow information, cost data, financial ratios, and other accounting information before making appropriate business decisions. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may possess theoretical knowledge of accounting without having sufficient competence in interpreting accounting information for practical business decision-making. Difficulties in understanding financial data, identifying relevant information, comparing financial performance, interpreting trends, and applying accounting information to business situations may limit students' ability to make appropriate decisions. Accounting Information Interpretation Skills therefore provide an important foundation for developing students' analytical and business decision-making competence. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Accounting Information Interpretation Skills on students’ business decision-making competence in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Information Processing Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting and decision-making competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Information Processing Theory explains how students receive, organize, analyse, interpret, and apply accounting information in making decisions. Human Capital Theory emphasizes the importance of developing relevant knowledge and skills that improve students’ productivity, employability, professional competence, and preparedness for workplace responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Information Interpretation Skills may influence students’ business decision-making competence. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Accounting Information Interpretation Skills will be assessed using indicators such as financial statement interpretation, income statement analysis, statement of financial position analysis, cash-flow statement interpretation, budget interpretation, variance analysis, financial ratio interpretation, profitability analysis, liquidity analysis, solvency analysis, efficiency analysis, financial trend analysis, comparative financial analysis, cost information interpretation, revenue information interpretation, expense information interpretation, inventory information interpretation, cash information interpretation, working-capital information interpretation, accounts receivable information interpretation, accounts payable information interpretation, financial-performance comparison, financial-data classification, identification of relevant accounting information, identification of irrelevant information, identification of financial patterns, identification of financial trends, interpretation of financial changes, interpretation of accounting relationships, interpretation of financial indicators, interpretation of financial risks, interpretation of financial opportunities, interpretation of financial reports, interpretation of accounting schedules, interpretation of management reports, interpretation of budget reports, interpretation of cost reports, interpretation of sales reports, interpretation of purchase reports, interpretation of inventory reports, interpretation of cash reports, interpretation of bank information, interpretation of accounting records, interpretation of financial summaries, interpretation of graphical accounting information, interpretation of tabular financial information, interpretation of numerical accounting information, interpretation of percentage changes, interpretation of financial ratios, interpretation of accounting estimates, interpretation of financial forecasts, interpretation of accounting information for planning, interpretation of accounting information for control, interpretation of accounting information for evaluation, interpretation of accounting information for performance monitoring, interpretation of accounting information for resource allocation, and application of accounting information to business situations. Students’ business decision-making competence will be assessed using indicators such as problem identification, opportunity identification, alternative generation, alternative evaluation, financial comparison, cost-benefit assessment, risk assessment, resource allocation, budgeting decisions, pricing decisions, investment decisions, financing decisions, purchasing decisions, production decisions, sales decisions, inventory decisions, cash-management decisions, credit decisions, supplier-selection decisions, customer-management decisions, cost-control decisions, expense-control decisions, profitability decisions, working-capital decisions, business expansion decisions, business contraction decisions, make-or-buy decisions, outsourcing decisions, product-selection decisions, project-selection decisions, performance-evaluation decisions, financial-planning decisions, strategic decisions, operational decisions, tactical decisions, evidence-based decision-making, logical reasoning, analytical reasoning, critical thinking, numerical reasoning, problem-solving, judgement, decision accuracy, decision timeliness, decision confidence, decision justification, consideration of alternatives, consideration of risks, consideration of financial consequences, use of accounting evidence, interpretation of business information, and overall business decision-making competence. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized accounting-information interpretation tests, financial-statement interpretation exercises, case studies, business decision-making scenarios, practical performance assessments, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, accounting-information interpretation abilities, and business decision-making competence. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Accounting Information Interpretation Skills on students’ business decision-making competence. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students’ decision-making competence scores before and after exposure to accounting-information interpretation activities may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Information Interpretation Skills have a significant positive impact on students’ business decision-making competence in Nigerian polytechnics.
