Effect of Financial Decision-Making Activities on Students’ Analytical Competence among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Universities

 

Abstract

Financial decision-making is an important practical competency in accounting because accounting professionals are expected to analyse financial information, evaluate alternatives, interpret financial consequences, and make appropriate decisions relating to business operations and resource utilization. Accounting Education students require strong analytical competence to effectively examine financial information and apply accounting knowledge to practical business situations. However, traditional accounting instruction may provide limited opportunities for students to engage in realistic financial decision-making activities that require the analysis and interpretation of financial information. Financial Decision-Making Activities provide students with practical opportunities to examine financial data, compare alternatives, evaluate costs and benefits, interpret financial reports, and make informed decisions using accounting principles. Such activities may strengthen students’ analytical abilities and improve their preparedness for accounting-related responsibilities. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Financial Decision-Making Activities on analytical competence among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge, analytical abilities, and practical skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Financial Decision-Making Activities may influence students’ analytical competence. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial decision-making activity assessment scales, financial case scenarios, practical decision-making tasks, analytical competence assessment instruments, performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, analytical competence scores before and after participation in the activities may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Financial Decision-Making Activities have a significant positive effect on analytical competence among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured financial decision-making activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to interpret financial information, analyse accounting data, evaluate alternatives, solve financial problems, and justify decisions. Financial-data interpretation activities may improve students’ ability to understand and apply information contained in accounting records. Financial-statement analysis may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate business performance and financial position. Revenue, expense, and cost analysis may improve students’ ability to identify financial patterns and assess operational performance. Profitability analysis may strengthen students’ understanding of financial outcomes. Cash-flow analysis may improve students’ ability to evaluate liquidity and cash movements. Budgeting activities may strengthen students’ ability to assess planned and actual financial performance. Investment-appraisal activities may improve students’ ability to compare investment alternatives and assess potential returns and risks. Working-capital activities may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate short-term financial decisions. Pricing and cost-control activities may improve students’ ability to assess the financial implications of operational choices. Resource-allocation exercises may strengthen students’ ability to determine appropriate uses of limited resources. Make-or-buy decisions may improve students’ ability to compare relevant costs and financial consequences. Financing decisions may strengthen students’ understanding of alternative sources of finance. Savings and expenditure decisions may improve students’ ability to evaluate financial priorities. Financial-forecasting activities may strengthen students’ ability to anticipate future financial conditions. Financial-planning exercises may improve students’ ability to develop appropriate financial strategies. Financial-risk assessment may strengthen students’ ability to identify and evaluate potential financial consequences. Alternative-evaluation activities may improve students’ ability to compare different courses of action. Cost-benefit analysis may strengthen students’ ability to assess the relative advantages and disadvantages of financial choices. Variance analysis may improve students’ ability to identify differences between expected and actual financial outcomes. Break-even analysis may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate cost, revenue, and output relationships. Ratio analysis may improve students’ ability to interpret financial performance indicators. Trend analysis may strengthen students’ ability to identify changes in financial performance over time. However, the effectiveness of Financial Decision-Making Activities may be constrained by inadequate accounting laboratories, limited access to realistic financial data, insufficient computers, poor internet connectivity, unreliable electricity supply, large class sizes, limited practical training periods, inadequate lecturer supervision, outdated instructional materials, limited access to accounting and financial-analysis software, insufficient financial case materials, inadequate feedback, low student participation, weak university-industry collaboration, and inadequate integration of practical financial decision-making activities into Accounting Education curricula.
