Effect of Financial Data Presentation Activities on Students’ Ability to Communicate Business Information in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Effective communication of business information is an important competency for Accounting Education students because accounting professionals are expected to present financial and business information clearly, accurately, and meaningfully to managers, clients, colleagues, and other stakeholders. Financial information may be presented through tables, charts, graphs, summaries, reports, dashboards, statements, and oral or digital presentations. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities may have limited opportunities to develop practical skills in presenting financial information in ways that can be easily understood and used for decision-making. Financial Data Presentation Activities provide students with opportunities to organize, summarize, analyse, visualize, interpret, and communicate financial information using realistic business situations. These activities may strengthen students’ ability to transform accounting data into clear and useful business information. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Financial Data Presentation Activities on students’ ability to communicate business information in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical communication skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Financial Data Presentation Activities may influence students’ ability to communicate business information. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, business-information communication skills assessment scales, financial-data presentation tasks, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, presentation assignments, report-writing exercises, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Financial Data Presentation Activities will be assessed using indicators such as financial-data organization, data classification, data summarization, data tabulation, table preparation, financial-chart preparation, graph preparation, bar-chart presentation, pie-chart presentation, line-graph presentation, trend presentation, comparative presentation, percentage presentation, ratio presentation, financial-summary preparation, accounting-report preparation, financial-statement presentation, income-statement presentation, statement-of-financial-position presentation, cash-flow information presentation, budget presentation, variance presentation, sales-data presentation, expense-data presentation, revenue-data presentation, profit-data presentation, cost-data presentation, inventory-data presentation, receivables-data presentation, payables-data presentation, financial-performance presentation, business-performance presentation, financial-dashboard preparation, spreadsheet-based presentation, accounting-software presentation, digital financial-data presentation, report formatting, document formatting, heading organization, table formatting, chart selection, graph selection, visual-data design, information sequencing, information prioritization, data labelling, chart labelling, axis labelling, legend preparation, source identification, data referencing, calculation verification, data accuracy checking, numerical consistency, presentation consistency, financial-data interpretation, trend identification, variance interpretation, comparison of financial information, identification of significant changes, identification of unusual values, identification of financial patterns, identification of business relationships, interpretation of ratios, interpretation of percentages, interpretation of financial indicators, explanation of financial results, preparation of management summaries, preparation of executive summaries, preparation of business briefs, preparation of financial memos, preparation of accounting reports, oral presentation, presentation delivery, verbal explanation, professional language, technical terminology, audience adaptation, question handling, response to clarification requests, presentation confidence, active listening, professional etiquette, communication clarity, communication conciseness, logical explanation, evidence-based communication, decision-oriented presentation, recommendation presentation, digital presentation, slide preparation, presentation-software use, spreadsheet presentation, electronic report preparation, financial dashboard presentation, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group activities, case studies, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging business-information presentation scenarios. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Financial Data Presentation Activities, practical experiences, and business-information communication skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Financial Data Presentation Activities on students’ ability to communicate business information. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, business-information communication scores before and after participation in the activities may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings.
