Effect of Business Transaction Documentation Exercises on Students’ Accounting Recording Accuracy among HND Students in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Accurate accounting records are essential for effective financial management, accountability, decision-making, and reporting in business organizations. Accounting personnel are required to properly document business transactions before recording them in journals, ledgers, cash books, and other accounting records. However, HND students in Nigerian polytechnics may experience difficulties in translating business transaction information into accurate accounting records because of limited exposure to practical documentation activities. Business Transaction Documentation Exercises provide students with opportunities to work with realistic business transactions, source documents, supporting records, and simulated accounting-office situations while applying appropriate documentation and recording procedures. Such practical activities may strengthen students’ ability to identify, interpret, document, classify, and accurately record business transactions. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Business Transaction Documentation Exercises on accounting recording accuracy among HND students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competencies through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and practical skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for workplace responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Business Transaction Documentation Exercises may influence accounting recording accuracy among HND students. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise HND students enrolled in Accounting Education programmes in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, business transaction documentation tasks, accounting recording accuracy assessment instruments, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, source-document exercises, simulated business records, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Business Transaction Documentation Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as identification of business transactions, source-document identification, transaction-date documentation, transaction-description documentation, amount recording, transaction-reference coding, document numbering, invoice preparation, receipt preparation, payment-voucher preparation, cash-sale documentation, credit-sale documentation, cash-purchase documentation, credit-purchase documentation, bank-transaction documentation, cheque documentation, electronic-payment documentation, deposit documentation, withdrawal documentation, expense documentation, income documentation, asset-acquisition documentation, liability documentation, capital documentation, owner-drawing documentation, supporting-document verification, transaction authorization, signature verification, document completeness, document accuracy, transaction classification, account identification, debit-and-credit identification, journal-entry preparation, ledger-posting preparation, cash-book preparation, bank-book preparation, sales-book preparation, purchases-book preparation, returns documentation, petty-cash documentation, payroll documentation, inventory documentation, document filing, document indexing, document retrieval, transaction matching, transaction verification, error identification, error correction, duplicate-document detection, missing-document detection, unauthorized-transaction detection, incorrect-amount identification, incorrect-date identification, incorrect-account identification, incorrect-document identification, fraud-awareness activities, internal-control procedures, audit-trail maintenance, accounting-software activities, spreadsheet activities, digital documentation, electronic record keeping, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group activities, case studies, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, and progressively challenging business transaction scenarios. Students’ accounting recording accuracy will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify business transactions correctly, recognize appropriate source documents, document transaction dates accurately, provide appropriate transaction descriptions, record transaction amounts correctly, assign transaction references, number documents correctly, prepare invoices, prepare receipts, prepare payment vouchers, document cash sales, document credit sales, document cash purchases, document credit purchases, document bank transactions, prepare cheque documentation, document electronic payments, document deposits and withdrawals, document expenses and income, document asset acquisitions, document liabilities, document capital contributions, document owner drawings, verify supporting documents, obtain appropriate authorization, verify signatures, ensure document completeness, maintain document accuracy, classify transactions appropriately, identify relevant accounts, distinguish debit and credit implications, prepare journal entries, post transactions to ledgers, prepare cash books, prepare bank books, prepare sales books, prepare purchases books, document returns, document petty-cash transactions, document payroll transactions, document inventory transactions, file accounting documents systematically, index records, retrieve documents, match transactions with supporting evidence, verify transaction information, identify recording errors, correct errors, detect duplicate documents, identify missing documents, detect unauthorized transactions, identify incorrect amounts, dates, accounts, and documents, recognize potential fraudulent transactions, apply internal controls, maintain audit trails, use accounting software, use spreadsheets, maintain digital accounting records, prepare electronic documents, and demonstrate overall accounting recording accuracy. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Business Transaction Documentation Exercises, practical experiences, and accounting recording accuracy. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Business Transaction Documentation Exercises on students’ accounting recording accuracy. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, accounting recording accuracy scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings.
