Effect of Business Newspaper Analysis on Students’ Understanding of Accounting-Related Economic Issues in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Accounting education requires students to understand not only accounting principles and procedures but also the economic environment within which accounting decisions and financial activities occur. Business newspapers provide current information on inflation, taxation, interest rates, exchange rates, government fiscal policies, public expenditure, business performance, financial markets, monetary policies, corporate activities, and other economic developments that may influence accounting practices. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities may have limited opportunities to connect classroom accounting knowledge with current economic issues reported in the business environment. Business Newspaper Analysis provides students with opportunities to examine, interpret, discuss, and relate current economic and business information to accounting concepts and practices. Such activities may improve students’ ability to understand contemporary economic developments and recognize their implications for accounting and financial decision-making. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Business Newspaper Analysis on students’ understanding of accounting-related economic issues in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Information Processing Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop knowledge through practical engagement with real-world information, reflection, conceptualization, and application. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes the active construction of knowledge as students interpret new information and relate it to their existing accounting knowledge. Information Processing Theory explains how students receive, organize, interpret, store, and retrieve information from business and economic reports. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Business Newspaper Analysis may influence students’ understanding of accounting-related economic issues. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, accounting-related economic-issue understanding tests, business newspaper analysis tasks, case-based questions, analytical performance rubrics, classroom observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Business Newspaper Analysis will be assessed using indicators such as newspaper selection, identification of relevant business reports, identification of economic information, extraction of accounting-related information, recognition of economic indicators, identification of business trends, interpretation of financial information, analysis of inflation reports, taxation reports, interest-rate reports, exchange-rate reports, government budget reports, public expenditure reports, monetary-policy reports, fiscal-policy reports, corporate-performance reports, banking reports, capital-market reports, investment reports, financial-market reports, commodity-price reports, employment reports, consumer-price reports, gross domestic product reports, government revenue reports, public debt reports, borrowing reports, trade reports, import and export reports, foreign-investment reports, business-policy reports, regulatory reports, corporate governance reports, financial-reporting developments, accounting-standard developments, audit-related developments, taxation-policy developments, business-risk reports, economic-growth reports, recession-related reports, monetary developments, financial-sector developments, business-environment reports, economic-policy changes, interpretation of economic terminology, identification of accounting implications, comparison of economic events, evaluation of business consequences, identification of financial consequences, application of accounting concepts to current events, classroom discussion, group analysis, individual analysis, newspaper clipping activities, article summarization, article comparison, source evaluation, information verification, evidence identification, fact checking, identification of bias, distinction between factual reporting and opinion, identification of credible information sources, use of multiple newspaper sources, use of digital business-news platforms, analysis of charts and tables, interpretation of financial data, interpretation of economic statistics, discussion of current accounting issues, presentation of findings, written analysis, oral presentation, peer discussion, lecturer feedback, reflective activities, and repeated newspaper-analysis exercises. Students’ understanding of accounting-related economic issues will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify relevant economic issues, explain economic concepts, recognize accounting implications of economic developments, interpret inflation information, explain taxation developments, understand interest-rate changes, interpret exchange-rate movements, understand fiscal policy, understand monetary policy, interpret government budget information, understand public expenditure, explain government revenue, interpret public debt information, understand borrowing activities, interpret corporate-performance reports, understand banking-sector developments, interpret capital-market information, understand investment trends, interpret financial-market developments, recognize commodity-price changes, understand employment trends, interpret consumer-price information, understand gross domestic product information, explain trade developments, understand import and export activities, interpret foreign-investment information, understand business-policy changes, recognize regulatory developments, understand corporate-governance issues, identify financial-reporting developments, recognize accounting-standard developments, understand audit-related issues, interpret taxation-policy changes, identify business risks, understand economic-growth trends, explain recessionary pressures, understand monetary developments, interpret financial-sector changes, assess the business environment, identify economic-policy implications, interpret economic terminology, connect economic developments with accounting concepts, evaluate financial consequences, compare alternative economic developments, apply accounting knowledge to current events, distinguish relevant from irrelevant information, evaluate information sources, identify credible reports, distinguish facts from opinions, recognize potential reporting bias, verify information using multiple sources, interpret financial statistics, interpret charts and tables, summarize business reports, communicate economic information clearly, discuss current accounting issues, present analytical findings, write evidence-based explanations, participate in group discussions, respond to case-based questions, apply critical-thinking skills, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate accounting knowledge, demonstrate economic awareness, demonstrate information-literacy skills, demonstrate decision-making ability, demonstrate communication skills, and overall understanding of accounting-related economic issues. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Business Newspaper Analysis, sources of business information, and levels of understanding of accounting-related economic issues. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Business Newspaper Analysis on students’ understanding of accounting-related economic issues. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students’ understanding scores before and after exposure to newspaper-analysis activities may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Business Newspaper Analysis has a significant positive effect on students’ understanding of accounting-related economic issues in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to systematic analysis of business newspapers are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify, interpret, evaluate, and apply current economic information to accounting concepts.
