Effect of Annual Report Analysis on Corporate Information Evaluation Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Annual reports are important sources of corporate financial and non-financial information and provide users with details about an organization’s financial performance, financial position, cash flows, accounting policies, corporate governance, risks, management activities, and future outlook. For Accounting Education students, the ability to critically examine and evaluate information contained in annual reports is an important practical skill that supports financial analysis, accounting decision-making, professional judgement, and workplace readiness. However, students may have limited exposure to practical activities that require them to examine actual corporate annual reports and distinguish relevant, reliable, and meaningful information from large volumes of financial and narrative disclosures. Annual Report Analysis provides students with opportunities to examine corporate reports, interpret financial and non-financial information, compare reported figures, identify significant disclosures, and make informed evaluations of corporate information. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Annual Report Analysis on corporate information evaluation skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Information Processing Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through direct engagement with real or simulated annual reports, reflection, conceptualization, and active application. Information Processing Theory explains how students acquire, organize, interpret, compare, and evaluate information obtained from complex corporate reports. Human Capital Theory emphasizes the importance of developing relevant knowledge and practical competencies that improve students’ productivity, employability, professional judgement, and preparedness for accounting-related responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Annual Report Analysis may influence students’ corporate information evaluation skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, corporate information evaluation skills assessment scales, annual report analysis tasks, practical evaluation exercises, observation checklists, performance rubrics, case-study questions, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Annual Report Analysis will be assessed using indicators such as annual report identification, report structure recognition, financial statement identification, statement of financial position analysis, statement of profit or loss analysis, cash-flow statement analysis, statement of changes in equity analysis, notes-to-the-financial-statements analysis, accounting-policy analysis, directors’ report analysis, auditors’ report analysis, corporate governance report analysis, sustainability-report analysis, risk-disclosure analysis, management discussion analysis, chairman’s statement analysis, financial highlights analysis, five-year financial-summary analysis, comparative financial information analysis, revenue analysis, expense analysis, profit analysis, asset analysis, liability analysis, equity analysis, cash-flow analysis, dividend analysis, earnings-per-share analysis, financial-ratio analysis, trend analysis, year-to-year comparison, industry comparison, competitor comparison, benchmark comparison, financial-performance evaluation, liquidity evaluation, profitability evaluation, efficiency evaluation, solvency evaluation, investment evaluation, financial-position evaluation, cash-flow evaluation, capital-structure evaluation, working-capital evaluation, corporate-governance evaluation, risk evaluation, accounting-estimate evaluation, accounting-policy comparison, disclosure-quality evaluation, consistency analysis, material-information identification, relevant-information identification, reliable-information identification, complete-information assessment, understandable-information assessment, comparable-information assessment, timely-information assessment, source verification, evidence verification, cross-referencing, information triangulation, financial-figure verification, calculation verification, consistency checking, discrepancy identification, unusual-figure identification, significant-change identification, material-transaction identification, related-party-transaction identification, contingent-liability identification, commitment identification, subsequent-event identification, going-concern disclosure evaluation, audit-opinion interpretation, qualified-opinion identification, emphasis-of-matter identification, internal-control disclosure evaluation, corporate-risk identification, financial-risk identification, operational-risk identification, market-risk identification, strategic-risk identification, regulatory-risk identification, governance-risk identification, sustainability-information evaluation, environmental-disclosure evaluation, social-information evaluation, corporate-responsibility evaluation, management-performance evaluation, board-composition evaluation, executive-compensation information evaluation, ownership-structure evaluation, shareholder-information evaluation, dividend-policy evaluation, corporate-strategy evaluation, future-outlook evaluation, corporate-information summarization, report interpretation, information comparison, evidence-based conclusion, professional judgement, analytical reasoning, critical thinking, decision-making, information-search skills, digital-report analysis, spreadsheet-based analysis, financial-data extraction, financial-data organization, financial-data visualization, practical demonstrations, guided analysis, individual assignments, group analysis, case studies, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging annual-report analysis scenarios. Students’ corporate information evaluation skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to locate relevant information, identify financial statements, interpret financial figures, evaluate financial position, evaluate financial performance, interpret cash flows, analyse accounting policies, assess corporate governance information, evaluate risk disclosures, interpret auditors’ reports, assess disclosure quality, compare financial information, identify trends, calculate and interpret relevant ratios, identify material information, distinguish relevant from irrelevant information, assess information reliability, verify financial information, cross-reference disclosures, detect inconsistencies, identify unusual financial changes, identify significant transactions, interpret related-party disclosures, evaluate contingent liabilities, identify commitments, interpret subsequent events, assess going-concern information, interpret audit opinions, identify qualified audit opinions, evaluate internal-control disclosures, assess corporate risks, evaluate management explanations, compare accounting policies, assess consistency of reported information, evaluate sustainability disclosures, analyse ownership information, evaluate dividend information, assess corporate strategy, interpret future outlook, summarize corporate information, support conclusions with evidence, apply professional judgement, demonstrate critical thinking, make informed decisions, organize financial information, extract data from annual reports, use spreadsheets for analysis, compare multiple reporting periods, communicate analytical findings, and demonstrate overall corporate information evaluation competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Annual Report Analysis, practical experiences, and corporate information evaluation skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Annual Report Analysis on students’ corporate information evaluation skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, corporate information evaluation skill scores before and after participation in Annual Report Analysis activities may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Annual Report Analysis has a significant positive effect on students’ corporate information evaluation skills in Nigeria.
