Effect of Accounting Education on Students’ Understanding of Corporate Transparency Practices in Nigeria

Abstract

Accounting education provides students with knowledge and skills relevant to financial reporting, corporate governance, auditing, accountability, and professional practice, while corporate transparency practices refer to the extent to which organizations provide clear, accurate, timely, and accessible information about their activities, financial position, decisions, and performance. Understanding corporate transparency is important to Accounting Education students because accounting professionals play significant roles in preparing, reviewing, communicating, and verifying corporate information. However, inadequate knowledge of transparency practices may limit students’ appreciation of the importance of openness, accountability, and reliable corporate reporting. This study therefore examines the effect of accounting education on students’ understanding of corporate transparency practices in Nigeria. Accounting education exposes students to financial accounting, auditing, corporate reporting, corporate governance, business law, taxation, and professional ethics. These areas provide a foundation for understanding how organizations communicate financial and non-financial information to shareholders, investors, regulators, employees, and other stakeholders. Through lectures, practical exercises, case studies, and discussions, students can develop knowledge of financial disclosures, reporting requirements, governance practices, accountability mechanisms, and the professional responsibilities involved in communicating corporate information. Students’ understanding of corporate transparency practices involves knowledge of the principles and processes through which organizations provide reliable and understandable information about their operations and performance. It includes awareness of financial disclosures, reporting accuracy, timely communication, corporate governance information, accountability, and access to relevant corporate information. Accounting education can strengthen this understanding by connecting financial reporting and auditing principles with corporate governance, ethical conduct, and accountability. Adequate knowledge may enable students to recognize the importance of transparent corporate practices and the role of accounting professionals in promoting them. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions, from which an appropriate sample will be selected. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a knowledge assessment instrument designed to measure students’ exposure to accounting education and their understanding of corporate transparency practices. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that accounting education has a significant positive effect on students’ understanding of corporate transparency practices. Students with stronger exposure to financial reporting, auditing, corporate governance, professional ethics, and accountability concepts are expected to demonstrate better understanding of transparency requirements and their importance to corporate stakeholders. The findings may also identify areas where students have limited knowledge, particularly regarding corporate disclosures, reporting accuracy, timely information, accountability, and governance-related transparency. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in Accounting Education. Lecturers may need to provide greater attention to corporate transparency and its relationship with accounting practice. Case studies involving corporate reporting, disclosure practices, governance decisions, financial misstatements, and accountability issues can help students connect theoretical knowledge with practical corporate situations. Practical exercises involving the evaluation of corporate reports may also improve students’ ability to recognize transparent and responsible reporting practices. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, tertiary institutions, curriculum developers, employers, and organizations concerned with corporate reporting and governance. Students may gain better preparation for professional responsibilities involving financial disclosure, reporting, auditing, and corporate accountability. Lecturers and curriculum developers may also use the findings to strengthen transparency, corporate governance, and ethical reporting content within Accounting Education programmes, while institutions may benefit from graduates who understand the importance of reliable and accountable corporate information. The study recommends that corporate transparency concepts should be strengthened within relevant Accounting Education courses through practical exercises, case studies, corporate report analysis, and discussions of governance and disclosure practices. Lecturers should emphasize reporting accuracy, timely disclosure, accountability, ethical conduct, corporate governance, and the responsibilities of accounting professionals in promoting transparency. Tertiary institutions should also encourage practical learning that connects accounting knowledge with contemporary corporate reporting situations. In conclusion, effective accounting education can improve students’ understanding of corporate transparency practices and better prepare future accounting professionals to contribute to transparent, accountable, and responsible corporate reporting.
