THE ROLE OF MOTIVATION ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

This study is conducted on the role of motivation on the academic performance of students in economics. Focus on the Dange Shuni Local Government Area of Sokoto State as a case study. The major objectives of this study were to determine the role of motivation on the academic of performance of students in economics. Also the knowledge skills acquired by the students of economics in secondary schools. To achieve this objective, survey method was used, five research questions were raised, and the total of 100 questionnaires made up of 282 students and 65 teachers were administered. In analyzing the data, simple percentages were used and responses analyzed with the aid of table. Based on the findings, it was resolve that student neglect the course of "Motivation", however, there is need for proper orientation, workshops, seminars and awareness to the students in economics to avoid them not to neglect the course (Motivation). It also reviews that students acquired the knowledge of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in economics. It was therefore, recommended that proper awareness on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation should be created. The study was concluded that the role of motivation on the academic performance of students in economics plays a vital role in sustaining economics learning in the classroom. Suggestion for further research studies were made on the related topics to the present problems.

Whether driven by intrinsic desires or extrinsic rewards, motivation significantly impacts how students approach their academic tasks and challenges. This paper delves into the various dimensions of this intricate relationship, exploring the influence of motivation on academic performance, the factors that shape and sustain motivation, and the implications for educational practice.

The Foundation of Academic Success: The Motivation Factor

The foundation of academic success is often built upon the cornerstone of motivation. Intrinsic motivation, rooted in the innate curiosity and interest of individuals, propels students to engage with their studies driven by a genuine desire to understand and learn. Intrinsically motivated students perceive learning as an end in itself, deriving satisfaction from the process of acquiring knowledge. As a result, they are more likely to adopt deep learning strategies, seek out challenges, and persist even when faced with obstacles. This intrinsic desire to excel creates a cycle of positive reinforcement, as the satisfaction gained from learning becomes a reward in itself.

Conversely, extrinsic motivation involves external incentives such as grades, recognition, or rewards. While these external factors can stimulate initial engagement, their long-term effects on academic performance are contingent upon their alignment with
