THE CAUSES OF POLLUTION AND ITS EFFECT ON MAN AND ITS ENVIRONMENT

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Pollution, a complex and pressing global issue, refers to the introduction of harmful contaminants into the natural environment, causing adverse effects on living organisms and ecosystems. It encompasses various forms, including air pollution, water pollution, soil contamination, and noise pollution, resulting from human activities such as industrialization, transportation, agriculture, and waste disposal. The causes of pollution are multifaceted, ranging from industrial emissions and vehicle exhaust to improper waste management and chemical spills. These pollutants not only degrade the quality of air, water, and soil but also pose serious health risks to humans and wildlife, disrupt ecosystems, and contribute to climate change. Understanding the causes and effects of pollution is essential for developing effective mitigation strategies and promoting sustainable practices to safeguard both human health and the environment.

Environmental pollution is a global problem that has attracted the attention of human beings for its severe long-term consequences and it is likely to highly influence human health. Simply, environmental pollution is addition of any substance (solid, liquid, or gas) or any form of energy (such as heat, sound, or radioactivity) to the environment at a rate faster than it can be dispersed, diluted, decomposed, recycled, or stored in some harmless form (Nathamson. 2022). The

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines pollution as "the presence in or introduction into the environment of substances or agents (including microorganisms), which may cause harm to human health or the living environment" (WHO, 2016). In other words, it is the departure toward the disequilibrium condition from the equilibrium condition in any system. It has been observed in recent times that the role the environment play to a nation’s development process can not be relegated to the background. Apart from being the physical surrounding for natural habitats, the environment provide the basis for human exploits for agricultural, industrial, commercial, technological and Tourism development of a society. For this and several other reasons, environmental issues now occupy a centre stage in academic discourse and other public fora both at the national and international levels.

Recorded evidence has also shown that the environment represents a wide range of the external circumstances, conditions and the things that affect the existence and development of an individual, organism, group (Isaichei 1999) and/or society. In Nigeria for instance, environmental issues did not gain official prominence until the 1988 Koko toxic waste dumping saga which also brought to the fore the exigent need to establish the Nigeria Federal Environmental Protection

Agency (FEPA), Federal Ministry of Environment and other relevant agencies, ostensibly to tackle environmentally related issues, in the country. These include issues such as environmental pollution, sanitation, depletion of ozone layer, desertification, flooding, erosion, poverty, bush burning, deforestation, soil conservation etc. All these mentioned above are a pointer to the fact that issues of environment and in fact environmental pollution which forms the basis of this paper has taken a center stage in the nation’s (Nigeria‟s) development process.

Environmentally minded scholars: Ocheri (2003:174), Gbehe (2004), and Aja (2005:114) have associated environmental pollution with human activities and albeit persistent human interaction with the environment. Research has also shown that as the population of a country grows/increases with attendant pressure on the environment especially in the wake of improved

Technologies, environmental abuse and pollution is nevertheless heightened with corresponding effects on lives of people and other living organisms, (Ocheri, 2003: 175 and Hausers, 1971). It has been observed further that man through industrial, agricultural and the ever increasing urbanization process, security and terrorist activities tend to directly and/or indirectly pollute the environment. Jande (2005) and Aja (2005:114) in their separate observations, also in tandem with the foregoing agree that unrestricted use of pesticides, insecticides, herbicides and indiscriminate dumping of refuse, excreta and animal dung as well as spillages from refineries, large scale bush burning etc are perceived as some of the leading factors of environmental pollution in Nigeria.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main objective of this study is to determine the causes of pollution and its effect on man and its environment

Specific objectives include;

1. To identify the primary sources of pollution affecting both humans and the environment.

2. To assess the impact of pollution on human health and the ecosystem.

3. To explore potential solutions to mitigate pollution and its adverse effects on both humans and the environment.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

1. What are the major sources of pollution contributing to environmental degradation and human health issues?

2. How does pollution specifically affect human health, wildlife, and ecosystem balance?

3. What measures can be implemented to reduce pollution levels and minimize its detrimental effects on both humans and the environment?

1.5 RESEARCH HYPOTHESES:

Hypotheses i

H0: There is no significant correlation between industrial emissions and air quality degradation.

H1: Industrial emissions have a significant correlation with air quality degradation.

Hypotheses ii

H0: There is no association between water pollution levels and adverse health effects in human populations residing near contaminated water bodies.

   H1: Higher levels of water pollution are associated with increased incidence of health issues in populations living nearby.

Hypothesis iii

H0: Implementing stricter environmental regulations does not lead to a decrease in pollution levels.

   H1: Stricter environmental regulations result in a measurable reduction in pollution levels over time.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Studying the causes and effects of pollution is crucial for understanding its impact on both humanity and the environment. By uncovering the root sources of pollution, such as industrial waste, vehicle emissions, and deforestation, we can implement targeted solutions to mitigate its harmful effects. Pollution poses serious health risks to humans, including respiratory problems and diseases, while also disrupting ecosystems, biodiversity, and natural resources. Understanding these consequences enables us to develop sustainable practices, policies, and technologies to preserve environmental quality and safeguard human well-being for present and future generations.

1.7 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The Causes of Pollution and Its Effects on Humans and the Environment

1. Identification of Pollution Sources: The study will investigate various sources of pollution including industrial activities, vehicular emissions, agricultural practices, and household waste. It will analyze the extent to which each source contributes to air, water, and soil pollution, with a focus on both localized and widespread impacts.

2. Assessment of Human Health Impacts:  The study will examine the direct and indirect effects of pollution on human health, including respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, and cancer. It will analyze epidemiological data, case studies, and health risk assessments to quantify the health burden associated with exposure to pollutants.

3. Evaluation of Environmental Consequences:  The study will assess the ecological consequences of pollution on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity loss, soil degradation, and water quality deterioration. It will investigate the effects of pollution on wildlife populations, habitat destruction, and the disruption of ecosystem services crucial for human well-being.

4. Analysis of Socioeconomic Factors:  The study will explore the socioeconomic factors influencing pollution levels and vulnerability to its effects, including demographic characteristics, income disparities, urbanization, and regulatory policies. It will examine how pollution disproportionately affects marginalized communities and exacerbates existing social inequalities.

5. Investigation of Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies: The study will review existing pollution control measures, technological innovations, and policy interventions aimed at reducing pollution levels and mitigating its adverse impacts on human health and the environment. It will assess the effectiveness of various strategies in different contexts and identify opportunities for enhancing resilience and sustainability.

6. Recommendations for Policy and Practice: Based on the findings, the study will formulate recommendations for policymakers, urban planners, industry stakeholders, and community organizations to address the root causes of pollution, improve regulatory frameworks, promote sustainable development practices, and foster public awareness and engagement in pollution prevention and mitigation efforts.

1.8 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The study on pollution aims to comprehensively investigate its causes and effects on humans and the environment. However, several limitations must be considered. Firstly, the scope of the study may be constrained due to the vastness of the topic, necessitating a focus on specific types or sources of pollution. Additionally, data availability poses a challenge, particularly in regions with inadequate monitoring systems. The complexity of interactions between pollutants, environmental factors, and socioeconomic variables complicates the analysis. Temporal and spatial variability, ethical considerations, and practical constraints further hinder research efforts. Furthermore, long-term impacts and feedback loops may be difficult to capture within the confines of a single study. Despite these limitations, addressing these challenges can lead to a more nuanced understanding of pollution's causes and effects, informing effective mitigation and management strategies.

1.9 DEFINITION OF TERMS

1. Pollution: Pollution refers to the introduction of harmful or toxic substances into the environment, resulting in adverse effects on living organisms and ecosystems. This can include pollutants such as chemicals, gases, particulate matter, and waste materials.

2. Point Source Pollution: Point source pollution refers to pollution that originates from a single, identifiable source, such as a factory, sewage treatment plant, or industrial facility. These sources release pollutants directly into the environment through pipes, vents, or other outlets.

3. Non-Point Source Pollution: Non-point source pollution refers to pollution that comes from diffuse sources and is not easily traced to a single point of origin. This can include runoff from agricultural fields, urban areas, construction sites, and transportation activities, which carry pollutants such as sediment, nutrients, and pesticides into waterways. 

4. Air Pollution: Air pollution refers to the contamination of the atmosphere by harmful substances, including gases, particulate matter, and chemical compounds. Common sources of air pollution include vehicle emissions, industrial processes, and burning of fossil fuels, which can contribute to respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases, and environmental degradation.

5. Water Pollution: Water pollution refers to the contamination of water bodies such as rivers, lakes, oceans, and groundwater sources by pollutants such as chemicals, heavy metals, pathogens, and nutrients. Sources of water pollution include industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, sewage discharge, and improper waste disposal, which can harm aquatic ecosystems and threaten human health through contaminated drinking water and recreational activities.

6. Land Pollution: Land pollution, also known as soil pollution, refers to the degradation of land resources by the accumulation of solid waste, chemicals, and hazardous materials. This can result from improper disposal of waste, industrial activities, mining operations, and agricultural practices, leading to soil contamination, loss of biodiversity, and reduced productivity of land for agriculture and other purposes.

7. Environmental Degradation: Environmental degradation refers to the deterioration of natural ecosystems and the loss of biodiversity due to human activities such as pollution, deforestation, habitat destruction, and climate change. This can have far-reaching impacts on ecosystem services, including air and water purification, soil fertility, and climate regulation, as well as on human health, livelihoods, and well-being.
