The Role of Verandas in Improving Residential Environmental Comfort

Abstract

Verandas are important transitional spaces in residential architecture, particularly in warm climates where they can provide a buffer between indoor living areas and the external environment. By creating shaded and semi-open spaces around buildings, verandas can influence solar exposure, natural ventilation, daylighting, and occupants' interaction with outdoor environments. Their design and positioning can therefore contribute to residential environmental comfort while also providing spaces for relaxation, social interaction, and household activities. This study examines the role of verandas in improving residential environmental comfort by assessing how their spatial and architectural characteristics influence indoor and outdoor conditions. It considers factors such as veranda depth, orientation, roof form, enclosure, opening configuration, and relationship with adjacent rooms. Attention is given to how these characteristics affect the movement of air, solar radiation, daylight, and heat between the external environment and residential interiors. The study further investigates the contribution of verandas to passive cooling and solar protection. A properly designed veranda can shade external walls, windows, and entrances from direct solar radiation, thereby reducing heat gain within adjacent rooms. Its semi-open configuration can also support natural air movement and provide a cooler intermediate space where occupants can spend time without being fully exposed to outdoor climatic conditions. In addition to thermal performance, verandas can influence visual and psychological comfort within residential environments. They provide opportunities for residents to access outdoor air, observe their surroundings, interact with neighbours, and engage in informal household activities. The study therefore considers how vegetation, shading elements, seating arrangements, screens, and appropriate spatial proportions can enhance the environmental and experiential qualities of residential verandas. The effectiveness of verandas may vary according to climate, building orientation, surrounding vegetation, local wind patterns, household activities, and architectural configuration. Poorly positioned or inadequately shaded verandas may provide limited environmental benefits, while excessive enclosure can reduce ventilation and compromise their transitional character. Effective design therefore requires a balanced consideration of thermal performance, daylighting, ventilation, privacy, usability, and maintenance. The study concludes that verandas can make a meaningful contribution to residential environmental comfort when appropriately integrated into building design. Their ability to provide solar protection, support natural ventilation, create shaded outdoor spaces, and improve the connection between indoor and outdoor environments makes them valuable passive design elements. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects and residential designers seeking to incorporate verandas as functional environmental buffers that improve comfort, adaptability, and overall residential quality.
