The Role of Rest Areas in Improving Healthcare Worker Wellbeing
Abstract
Healthcare workers operate in demanding environments characterized by long working hours, emotional pressures, high workloads, and frequent exposure to stressful situations. The physical environment within healthcare facilities can influence how effectively staff recover from work-related demands and maintain their wellbeing. Rest areas provide opportunities for healthcare workers to pause, relax, socialize, and temporarily withdraw from demanding clinical activities. However, these spaces are often overlooked in healthcare planning or provided without adequate consideration of staff needs, making their assessment important for creating supportive healthcare environments. This study examines the role of rest areas in improving healthcare worker wellbeing, focusing on how their location, size, accessibility, spatial organization, and environmental qualities influence staff experience. It considers different types of rest spaces, including staff lounges, quiet rooms, outdoor gardens, break rooms, informal seating areas, and dedicated relaxation spaces. The study also investigates how healthcare workers perceive these spaces and the extent to which they support physical recovery, psychological relaxation, social interaction, and temporary separation from clinical activities. The architectural characteristics of rest areas can significantly influence their effectiveness. Adequate seating, appropriate lighting, acoustic control, natural ventilation, comfortable temperatures, privacy, and access to daylight can contribute to a more relaxing environment. The incorporation of natural elements, views of vegetation, indoor plants, and outdoor spaces can further enhance the restorative qualities of staff areas. Appropriate spatial separation from noisy or highly active clinical zones may also help healthcare workers achieve meaningful periods of rest during demanding work schedules. The study further considers the social and functional dimensions of healthcare worker rest areas. Spaces that accommodate both individual retreat and informal social interaction can support relationships among staff and provide opportunities for communication and peer support. Flexible furniture arrangements and varied spatial settings can allow workers to choose between quiet activities and social engagement according to their preferences. Convenient access to rest areas is also important because spaces that are distant from workstations or difficult to access may discourage regular use, particularly during short break periods. Despite their potential benefits, the provision of effective rest areas may be constrained by limited floor space, competing clinical requirements, construction costs, staffing patterns, and inadequate recognition of staff wellbeing within healthcare design. Rest spaces may also become ineffective when poorly maintained, overcrowded, noisy, or lacking basic amenities. Addressing these challenges requires healthcare planning approaches that recognize staff facilities as an integral part of the healthcare environment rather than as secondary spaces. User participation and post-occupancy evaluation can also help ensure that rest areas respond to actual staff needs. The study aims to provide an understanding of how architectural design and planning of rest areas can contribute to improved healthcare worker wellbeing. The findings are expected to assist architects, healthcare planners, administrators, and facility managers in developing staff environments that support recovery, comfort, social interaction, and positive workplace experiences. By integrating accessible, comfortable, restorative, and appropriately located rest areas into healthcare facilities, architectural design can contribute to healthier working environments while recognizing the important role of healthcare workers in effective healthcare delivery.
