The Role of Pocket Parks in Improving Urban Environmental Quality

Abstract

Rapid urbanization has increased the pressure on land and natural resources within cities, resulting in reduced vegetation, increased surface temperatures, air pollution, and declining environmental quality. Pocket parks, which are small-scale green spaces integrated into urban areas, provide opportunities to introduce vegetation and ecological functions into densely developed neighbourhoods. Despite their limited size, strategically located pocket parks can contribute to environmental improvement while also providing spaces for recreation and social interaction. This study examines the role of pocket parks in improving urban environmental quality, with emphasis on their ecological, climatic, and social contributions. The study assesses the environmental characteristics and performance of selected pocket parks within urban neighbourhoods. Factors such as vegetation coverage, tree density, landscape composition, surface materials, shading, permeability, and spatial configuration are examined. The research considers how these characteristics influence local environmental conditions and whether pocket parks effectively provide green infrastructure within areas where larger public parks may be difficult to develop. Particular attention is given to the contribution of pocket parks to urban microclimate regulation. Vegetation and shaded surfaces can reduce exposure to solar radiation and contribute to lower surface and ambient temperatures. The study examines the potential of pocket parks to mitigate localized heat, improve outdoor thermal comfort, and provide shaded environments for pedestrians and nearby residents. The relationship between vegetation characteristics, park size, surrounding building density, and microclimatic performance is also considered. The research further investigates the ecological and environmental benefits associated with pocket parks. Vegetated spaces can support biodiversity, improve stormwater infiltration, reduce surface runoff, and contribute to localized air-quality improvement. The use of permeable surfaces, trees, shrubs, groundcovers, and other landscape elements is assessed in relation to their environmental functions. The study also considers how the strategic distribution of small green spaces can create a network of environmental resources across densely developed urban areas. In addition to environmental functions, the study recognizes the social value of pocket parks in improving the quality and usability of urban neighbourhoods. Accessible green spaces can provide opportunities for relaxation, informal recreation, social interaction, and everyday contact with nature. However, factors such as inadequate maintenance, limited accessibility, poor landscape design, security concerns, and inappropriate land-use relationships may reduce their effectiveness. Effective planning, management, and community involvement are therefore considered important for sustaining their benefits. The study aims to evaluate the contribution of pocket parks to urban environmental quality and identify design and planning strategies for maximizing their performance. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for urban planners, architects, landscape designers, and local authorities seeking to integrate small-scale green infrastructure into increasingly compact urban environments. By strategically incorporating pocket parks into neighbourhoods, cities can improve environmental conditions, strengthen urban ecological networks, and create more comfortable and liveable public spaces.
