The Role of Entrance Design in Creating Positive User Experience

Abstract

Entrance design plays an important role in shaping the first impression and overall user experience of a building. As the primary point of transition between the external environment and interior spaces, the entrance influences how users perceive, approach, enter, and navigate a building. Elements such as visibility, accessibility, scale, spatial organization, material selection, lighting, signage, and landscaping contribute to the character and functionality of entrances. Poorly designed entrances may create confusion, discomfort, or barriers, while well-planned entrances can promote positive emotional responses and a sense of welcome. This study examines the role of entrance design in creating positive user experiences within contemporary buildings. It focuses on how architectural characteristics of entrances influence users' perceptions of comfort, accessibility, safety, identity, and spatial quality. Particular attention is given to the relationship between entrance configuration and the expectations of different user groups, including visitors, occupants, elderly persons, and persons with disabilities. The study recognizes that entrance design should respond not only to functional requirements but also to psychological and social aspects of building use. Key design elements such as entrance visibility, scale, proportions, circulation paths, threshold spaces, doors, canopies, lighting, signage, and waiting areas are considered in relation to user experience. Clear visual connections and intuitive circulation can improve orientation and reduce uncertainty, while appropriate shading, weather protection, and comfortable transitional spaces can enhance environmental comfort. The integration of architectural details and landscape elements can further strengthen the identity and attractiveness of building entrances. The study also considers the influence of entrance design on accessibility and inclusivity. Step-free access, adequate door widths, appropriate ramps, tactile indicators, clear signage, and sufficient circulation space can improve usability for people with different physical abilities. Similarly, the incorporation of security features without creating an intimidating environment is important in establishing a balance between safety and openness. These factors demonstrate that entrance design can influence both practical performance and users' emotional responses to buildings. Despite its importance, entrance design is sometimes treated primarily as a functional requirement rather than as a significant component of architectural experience. Challenges may arise from inadequate planning, limited consideration of diverse user needs, poor coordination between external and internal circulation, and inappropriate selection of materials or environmental control measures. Addressing these issues requires a user-centred approach that considers the entrance as an integrated spatial experience rather than simply an access point. The study aims to establish the key entrance design factors that contribute to positive user experiences and provide architectural considerations for improving the quality of building entrances. It is expected to contribute to the development of more welcoming, accessible, legible, safe, and comfortable entrance environments. The findings may assist architects and other built-environment professionals in incorporating user experience principles into entrance design and in creating buildings that respond effectively to both functional requirements and human perceptions.
