The Role of Architectural Design in Creating Healthier Indoor Environments
Abstract
Architectural design plays an important role in creating healthier indoor environments because the configuration, materials, ventilation, lighting, and environmental conditions of buildings can directly influence occupant wellbeing. People spend significant periods of their lives indoors, making the quality of indoor spaces an important consideration in residential, educational, healthcare, commercial, and public buildings. Poorly designed environments may contribute to inadequate ventilation, excessive heat, poor lighting, noise, moisture problems, and exposure to indoor pollutants. Integrating health considerations into architectural design is therefore essential for improving indoor environmental quality. This study examines the role of architectural design in creating healthier indoor environments, focusing on the design features and strategies that support occupant physical comfort and wellbeing. It considers natural ventilation, daylighting, thermal comfort, indoor air quality, acoustic conditions, material selection, spatial organization, and access to outdoor views and vegetation. The study explores how these elements can be coordinated during the design process to create indoor spaces that support healthy and comfortable patterns of occupancy. Particular attention is given to ventilation and indoor air quality. Building orientation, window placement, room configuration, ventilation openings, and airflow pathways can influence the removal of pollutants, moisture, odours, and accumulated heat from interior spaces. Appropriate material selection is also considered because certain finishes, adhesives, furnishings, and construction products may affect indoor air quality. The study therefore examines how passive ventilation and healthier material choices can contribute to improved indoor environmental conditions. The study further considers daylighting, thermal comfort, and acoustic quality as important dimensions of healthy interior environments. Adequate natural lighting can support visual comfort and reduce dependence on artificial lighting, while appropriate building envelope design can help regulate indoor temperatures. Effective acoustic design can reduce unwanted noise and support concentration, privacy, rest, and communication. These environmental factors are examined as interconnected components of a healthy architectural environment rather than isolated design considerations. Spatial planning and occupants' interaction with the built environment are also considered. Access to natural views, greenery, outdoor spaces, appropriate spatial proportions, privacy, and effective circulation can influence psychological comfort and user experience. Building design must also respond to differences in occupancy patterns, age groups, physical abilities, and functional requirements. The study therefore emphasizes a human-centred approach in which architectural decisions are informed by the diverse needs and behaviours of building users. The study aims to establish the role of architectural design in improving indoor environmental health and identify strategies that can support healthier, more comfortable, and resilient buildings. Its findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, developers, and building professionals in integrating health-oriented principles into contemporary architectural practice. By addressing ventilation, daylighting, thermal conditions, acoustics, materials, and spatial quality from the early design stages, architecture can make a significant contribution to improved occupant wellbeing and indoor environmental quality.
