Abstract
Emergency housing is required in situations such as natural disasters, displacement, conflict, epidemics, and other crises that result in sudden shortages of safe and habitable accommodation. Conventional construction methods may be too slow or resource-intensive to respond effectively to urgent housing needs. Modular construction offers an alternative approach by allowing building components or complete modules to be manufactured under controlled conditions and rapidly assembled on site. This approach has the potential to improve the speed, consistency, and flexibility of emergency housing provision. This study examines the potential of modular construction for emergency housing, focusing on its ability to provide rapid, functional, and adaptable shelter solutions. The study considers modular systems in relation to construction speed, transportation, assembly, scalability, spatial flexibility, and material efficiency. Particular attention is given to how modular units can be designed and deployed to respond to varying household sizes, climatic conditions, site constraints, and emergency situations. The study also explores the architectural and environmental performance of modular emergency housing. Factors such as thermal comfort, natural ventilation, daylighting, privacy, sanitation, accessibility, structural stability, and protection from adverse weather conditions are considered important in ensuring that emergency shelters provide more than temporary physical protection. The integration of passive design strategies and locally appropriate materials can further improve the suitability of modular housing for different environmental contexts. Another important consideration is the adaptability and reusability of modular housing systems. Modules can potentially be relocated, expanded, reconfigured, or reused as emergency conditions change, reducing the need for complete reconstruction. Standardized components can also facilitate mass production and simplify replacement or repair. However, transportation requirements, site preparation, connection systems, storage, and logistical coordination may influence the practical effectiveness of modular housing in emergency situations. Despite its potential advantages, modular emergency housing faces challenges related to initial investment, transportation costs, manufacturing capacity, land availability, cultural acceptance, and regulatory requirements. Poorly designed modular units may also create problems related to overcrowding, privacy, thermal discomfort, or inadequate services. Successful implementation therefore requires consideration of local social needs, construction capabilities, environmental conditions, infrastructure, and long-term housing strategies. The study aims to assess the potential of modular construction as an approach to addressing emergency housing needs and identify the design, technical, and logistical factors that influence its effectiveness. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, housing authorities, humanitarian organizations, developers, and policymakers involved in emergency shelter provision. The study can contribute to the development of faster, adaptable, resource-efficient, and environmentally responsive emergency housing solutions that can support affected communities during periods of crisis.
