The Influence of Spatial Hierarchy on User Movement in Public Buildings

Abstract

Spatial hierarchy is an important principle in architectural design because it establishes relationships between different spaces and helps users understand how a building is organized. In public buildings, where users may include large numbers of visitors, staff, and first-time occupants, clear spatial relationships can influence movement, orientation, accessibility, and overall user experience. Poorly defined spatial hierarchy may result in confusion, unnecessary movement, congestion, and difficulty locating important destinations. This study examines the influence of spatial hierarchy on user movement in public buildings, focusing on how the arrangement and relative importance of spaces affect circulation patterns. It considers the organization of primary and secondary spaces, entrances, corridors, transition areas, vertical circulation, gathering spaces, and service areas. The study seeks to understand how spatial hierarchy guides users through public buildings and contributes to efficient and comprehensible movement. The research also explores the role of spatial differentiation in establishing clear movement patterns. Changes in scale, ceiling height, material, lighting, colour, visibility, and spatial proportions can be used to distinguish major circulation routes and important destinations from supporting spaces. Such architectural cues can help users recognize primary entrances, reception areas, major halls, staircases, and other key spaces without relying entirely on signage. Wayfinding and visual connectivity are further considered as important aspects of spatial hierarchy. Strong visual relationships between circulation routes and destinations can help users anticipate where they need to move and reduce uncertainty. The positioning of entrances, reception areas, corridors, stairs, elevators, and open spaces can establish a logical sequence that supports intuitive movement. Effective spatial hierarchy can therefore contribute to improved orientation and reduced unnecessary circulation. The study also considers the needs of diverse users within public buildings. Elderly persons, children, persons with disabilities, visitors unfamiliar with the building, and regular occupants may experience spaces differently depending on their mobility and familiarity with the environment. Accessible circulation routes, appropriate transition spaces, clear visual cues, adequate lighting, and inclusive wayfinding should therefore be incorporated into hierarchical spatial planning to support equitable movement. The study aims to provide a clearer understanding of how spatial hierarchy influences user movement and circulation efficiency in public buildings. Its findings are expected to assist architects, planners, and building managers in developing public environments that are easier to navigate, more accessible, and more responsive to user needs. By integrating spatial hierarchy with wayfinding, inclusive design, and effective circulation planning, public buildings can provide clearer movement patterns and improved user experiences.
