The Influence of Shared Corridors on Social Interaction Among Apartment Residents
Abstract
Shared corridors are important circulation spaces within apartment buildings, connecting individual dwelling units with entrances, stairs, lifts, communal facilities, and other parts of the building. Beyond their movement function, these spaces can create opportunities for residents to encounter, communicate, and interact with one another. The configuration, width, lighting, visibility, and environmental quality of shared corridors may therefore influence the social character of apartment living. Understanding this relationship is important for residential buildings that aim to support both privacy and community interaction. This study examines the influence of shared corridors on social interaction among apartment residents, focusing on how corridor design and spatial organization affect opportunities for informal encounters. It considers factors such as corridor width, length, visibility, access points, dwelling entrances, seating opportunities, and connections to communal spaces. Attention is given to the frequency and nature of resident interactions occurring within shared circulation areas. The study examines how corridor configuration can influence opportunities for residents to pause, greet neighbours, engage in short conversations, or participate in informal activities. Wider corridors with appropriate spaces for temporary occupation may encourage social encounters without significantly disrupting pedestrian movement. Conversely, narrow, poorly lit, or excessively enclosed corridors may encourage residents to move directly between their apartments and other destinations, limiting opportunities for interaction. Environmental conditions are further considered in relation to corridor use and social engagement. Natural lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, acoustic conditions, visual connection, surface finishes, and artificial lighting can affect how comfortable residents feel within shared circulation spaces. Appropriate environmental conditions may encourage residents to remain briefly within corridors, while uncomfortable or poorly maintained spaces may discourage social use and contribute to a more isolated residential experience. The study also considers the balance between social interaction, privacy, security, and circulation efficiency. Shared corridors connect multiple households and therefore provide opportunities for social contact, but excessive exposure to neighbours may conflict with residents' desire for privacy. The location of dwelling entrances, doors, windows, communal facilities, and transitional spaces can influence this balance. Effective corridor planning should therefore accommodate movement while providing appropriate opportunities for interaction without compromising residential privacy or security. The study aims to assess how shared corridor design influences social interaction among apartment residents and to identify architectural characteristics that support positive communal relationships. The findings are expected to contribute to residential design approaches that balance efficient circulation, privacy, security, environmental comfort, and social connectivity. The research may assist architects, housing developers, and residential planners in creating apartment buildings where shared circulation spaces contribute meaningfully to community life.
