The Influence of Neighbourhood Layout on Perceived Security
Abstract
Neighbourhood layout plays an important role in shaping residents' perceptions of safety and security within residential environments. The arrangement of streets, buildings, open spaces, pedestrian routes, entrances, boundaries, and communal facilities can influence visibility, accessibility, movement, and opportunities for social interaction. A poorly organized neighbourhood may contain isolated areas, concealed spaces, confusing circulation patterns, or inadequate connections that can create feelings of insecurity. Understanding the relationship between spatial organization and perceived security is therefore important for creating residential environments that support both physical safety and occupant confidence. This study examines the influence of neighbourhood layout on perceived security in residential areas. It focuses on how street patterns, building arrangement, spatial connectivity, accessibility, visibility, open-space distribution, and the relationship between private and public areas affect residents' perceptions of safety. The study considers both physical characteristics of neighbourhood layout and residents' experiences of using streets, pathways, communal spaces, and other shared environments. It seeks to identify spatial conditions that contribute to positive or negative perceptions of neighbourhood security. The arrangement of buildings and streets can significantly influence opportunities for natural surveillance and informal observation. Buildings positioned toward streets and shared spaces may provide greater visibility of outdoor activities, while appropriately designed entrances, windows, balconies, and frontages can support passive observation. Conversely, long blank walls, poorly connected streets, hidden pathways, and excessive enclosure may reduce visibility and create spaces that residents perceive as vulnerable. These spatial characteristics demonstrate the importance of integrating security considerations into neighbourhood planning. Neighbourhood layout also influences movement and social interaction, which can affect perceptions of security. Well-connected pedestrian routes and clearly defined public, semi-public, and private spaces can improve orientation and encourage regular activity within shared areas. Active streets and communal spaces may provide greater opportunities for residents to observe and interact with one another. However, excessive openness or unrestricted accessibility may also create concerns regarding privacy and control, making an appropriate balance between connectivity, visibility, accessibility, and territorial definition necessary. The study further considers the influence of environmental and contextual factors on perceived security. Street lighting, landscape design, boundary treatments, maintenance conditions, building density, land-use patterns, and the presence of people at different times of day can modify how residents experience the same neighbourhood layout. Perceptions may also vary according to residents' age, gender, length of residence, daily activities, and familiarity with the surrounding environment. These factors highlight the need for neighbourhood security strategies that respond to both physical design and user experience. The study aims to assess the relationship between neighbourhood layout and residents' perceptions of security and to identify spatial planning principles that can support safer and more comfortable residential environments. It is expected to contribute to improved understanding of how street configuration, building arrangement, visibility, connectivity, territorial definition, and communal spaces influence perceived security. The findings can provide useful guidance for architects, urban designers, planners, housing developers, and local authorities in designing neighbourhoods that promote safety while maintaining accessibility, privacy, social interaction, and overall environmental quality.
